King County's Wastewater Treatment Division picked Kiewit Infrastructure West as general contractor/construction manager to start pre-construction on its two-phase $226 million upgrade and expansion of its Elliott West Wet Weather Treatment Station. Kiewit was awarded $5.5 million for the project's pre-construction phase, which will begin in the middle of this month. The construction phase of the project is estimated to cost around $221 million, according to the project's request for proposals, and will begin after pre-construction work and contract negotiations are complete. We’re cooking with gas! Years of planning and construction has come to fruition at our new Central Interceptor Māngere Pump Station. For the first time ever recycled wastewater has been sent from the pump station to a new confluence chamber and onto the treatment plant for processing. The chamber is the concrete structure housing the city’s large wastewater pipes or interceptors. But, what about those German-made pumps pumping the recycled wastewater? Well, they’re some of the biggest in the country and in the first test they pumped 1300 litres of wastewater per second for 30 seconds. Impressive. To say complex engineering and design was involved in this process would be an understatement. More testing is on the cards for the pumps as the team get ready for section one of the Central Interceptor tunnel to be given the tick of approval for operation by the end of the year. 💧Innovative water project technique keeps traffic flowing💧 Our engineers, who are constructing a new £155m water pipeline, have started work on crossing one of the region’s busiest roads. However, the team delivering NWG (Northumbrian Water Group) Project Pipeline: County Durham and Tees Valley are laying the pipework under the A68 without impacting on road users. Due to the potential disruption of traffic management or even a closure of the road on Bildershaw Bank, near West Auckland, specialist contractors have been employed to tunnel under the road, avoiding the need to dig trenches in the carriageway. The construction of Phase 1 of the 57km pipeline is being carried out by Farrans and specialists from HB Tunnelling have been brought in for the A68 crossing. Following preparation work on either side of the road, engineers are now using a micro-tunnelling machine to enable the pipes to pass beneath the carriageway. The technique will take between four and six weeks to pass 60 metres in length under the ground, creating a 1200mm diameter tunnel that will connect specially-constructed “drive” and “reception” pits that enable the work. Particularly in the East of England: it’s the most water-scarce area and receives a third less rainfall than the rest of the country. 📖 Read the latest in New Civil Engineer on how Anglian Water Services' Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA), an innovative partnership between Anglian Water, Jacobs and partners (Farrans Construction, Mott MacDonald JN Bentley and Costain Group PLC), is building a safer, future-proof water supply for the East of England. SPA is the biggest drinking water grid program in the U.K. in a generation and one of the largest #infrastructure programs in Europe. It relies on diverting water from the wettest areas in the north of the region (Lincolnshire) to the driest areas in the south and the east by building over 310 kilometers (~192 miles) of interconnected pipelines.
