In a recent survey📊, Kings Research asked people the primary reason for choosing plant-based meat products over traditional meat. The results paint a clear picture. https://lnkd.in/dGJbMN3s 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 (𝟒𝟕%):🤤 The largest portion of respondents, nearly half, said that they choose plant-based meat products primarily because they find the taste and texture comparable to traditional meat. This suggests that for many people, the sensory experience of eating is a significant factor in their choice. They seek the taste and texture of meat, and plant-based alternatives, which successfully mimic these qualities, are highly appealing. 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 (𝟑𝟑%):💪 One-third of respondents selected health reasons as the main reason they prefer plant-based meat products. This indicates a strong awareness and concern for the potential health advantages associated with plant-based diets, such as lower cholesterol levels, reduced risk of heart disease, and better weight management. These respondents prioritize their well-being and see plant-based options as a healthier alternative to traditional meat. 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 (𝟐𝟎%):🌱 A smaller but still significant group said they choose plant-based meat products primarily due to environmental concerns. This reflects an awareness of the environmental impact of meat production, including factors such as greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water usage. These respondents opt for these products with the aim of reducing their ecological footprint and contributing to a more sustainable food system. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑳𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝑨𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒕-𝑩𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝑴𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕❓ As the trends indicate, the consumption of plant-based meat products is increasing. Notably, in the #US., plant-based meat dollar sales rose 43% and unit sales went up by 20% from 2019 to 2022. Edwin Lee, a vegetarian with a keen eye for healthy eating, noticed a distinct lack of nutritious fast food options in Malaysia. This led him to establish ULTIMEAT in 2021, aimed at filling this gap with their range of burger patties and nuggets. But Ultimeat is more than just another player in the plant-based meat market. It's a forward-thinking biotech startup that recently launched a groundbreaking product: mycoprotein, derived from fungus, or more simply put, mushroom protein. Unlike traditional meat substitutes that mimic animal flesh superficially, mycoprotein is cultivated through fermentation, creating a protein source akin to animal protein without using any animal cells. Ultimeat's Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Yu-Wei Lin, emphasised the sustainability of fermentation technology, which requires significantly less space compared to conventional farming practices. The startup has also developed bespoke equipment internally to support their innovative approach. These strides position Ultimeat as Malaysia's pioneering biotech firm, specialising in precision fermentation to produce meat alternatives. All their products are manufactured at their Klang facility, with their research laboratory based at an MRANTI facility. This morning I had a pleasure to attend the ProVeg International webinar: Evolving appetites: How to drive market success in a plant-based economy. A deep dive focus on: NL, AT, DE. My key-take aways from the session: 🌱People in Europe are transitioning towards flexitarian / plant-based diets, but their main motivations include health and animal welfare, rather than environmental reasons (however it differs between regions) 👨👩👦Young people (gen z) and women drive the transition towards plant-based diets in European countries, but interestingly men are more likely to follow a fully vegan diet 👨🏽🦰👩🏻🦳Gen X is the generation least likely to eat plant-based food, so new strategies are needed to address this consumer group (better texture? availability? variety of plant-based meat alternatives?) 🏷️People are increasingly interested in traceability and transparency in food products - will this trend drive a change in food labelling in the EU? I think it’s high time to think about it! 🫛The Green Protein Alliance and ProVeg Netherlands have recently introduced protein tracker - a tool used for monitoring the proportion of animal- to plant-based protein sources sold in supermarkets across the country.
