Telecom operators have been virtualizing their networks for years. This groundwork is the perfect soil for AI/ML strategies. A 5G-network can deliver data for $0.25 per gigabyte. But, when you start implementing dynamic AI/ML strategies, you can boost capacity by 25% and reduce the costs to $0.21 per gigabyte. For example: using AI/ML to optimize traffic with MIMO (multiple input, multiple output), an antenna technology for wireless communications in which multiple antennas are used at both the source (transmitter) and the destination (receiver).

In the context of how AI can optimize radio performance and more reliable connections in wireless networks, I came across an insightful MWC’24 article on how sequential learning can enable multi-vendor wireless AI systems. Given the rapidly evolving landscape of wireless technology, the integration of AI across different vendors presents both significant opportunities and complex challenges. The ability for these AI systems to communicate seamlessly is critical for success. Without a shared framework, AI models from different vendors may struggle to integrate, leading to inefficiencies. Collaborations, like those between Qualcomm and Nokia, are essential for developing standards that facilitate interoperability. These standards simplify the integration process, allowing AI systems from different vendors to work together more effectively. As wireless networks evolve, the need for AI interoperability will only intensify. Investing in open standards and fostering collaboration among vendors is key. By ensuring that AI systems are compatible, we can build more resilient, flexible networks. This collaborative approach not only enhances interoperability but also drives innovation, enabling vendors to create more powerful and versatile AI solutions. The wireless industry must prioritize AI interoperability. By focusing on standards, collaboration, and innovation, we can unlock the full potential of AI in wireless networks, creating a more connected, intelligent future. Having our corporate leaders informing and educating our elected officials is not only good business for #VIAVI Solutions, it is good applied civics. VIAVI's CTO Dr. Sameh Yamany lives the American Dream every day and demonstrates through his example and personal leadership that opportunities are there for all who want to step up to the challenges. AI in telecommunications is an exciting and complex subject that will be rich with wonderful opportunities for society if we can create the essential guardrails for it to operate successfully under our Constitution. Those guardrails of AI in telecommunications will depend on AI-based testing to deliver conveniences and innovations with the essential social trust in AI needed for its adoption.
I am incredibly proud to have participated in the US House Hearing on AI and Telecommunications last year. It was a valuable opportunity to showcase #VIAVI's leadership across critical areas, including Telco AI, Digital Twin, Open RAN (VALOR), AIOps, Network Slicing, and Energy and Spectrum Efficiency. One of the highlights for me was when I introduced the concept of 'AI testing AI,' emphasizing the importance of establishing guardrails and methodologies to ensure that AI tools used in telecommunications do not inadvertently impact the network or the consumer experience.
