In this Wave of Discovery, we spotlight a transformative journey in neurosurgery: the evolution of imaging. Inspired by Roentgen's discovery of X-rays in 1895, pioneers like Walter Dandy, António Moniz, Lars Leksell and Sir Godfrey Hounsfield envisioned the potential of linking imaging with precise brain and spine localization. Early breakthroughs, such as intraoperative lateral radiography in the 1970s, laid the groundwork for advancements like CT-based navigation, 3D optical systems and today’s robot-assisted surgery. Their ingenuity revolutionized patient care and continues to shape the tools neurosurgeons rely on today. https://lnkd.in/gGUCKvZj #AANSRippleEffect Jacques Morcos

High-Resolution Imaging of the Hip Joint in the Age of Deep Learning by Ji Lin, MD; et al. (Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY, USA) One of the most frequently performed MR examinations at imaging centers specializing in #orthopedic imaging, is MRI of the hip. The relatively thin cartilage of the hip requires superior in-plane and through-plane (slice) resolution to maintain diagnostic accuracy, which results in longer scan times. Given the large number of these studies, the option for a more efficient hip #MRI protocol would not only improve patient care at the individual level, but would also contribute to overall increased scanning capacity. In this article the authors outline a 3T protocol with deep learning-based image reconstruction, reduced echo spacing, and reduced specific absorption rate (SAR) with optimization of radiofrequency (RF) pulses to enable a hip MRI protocol that requires no more than 15 minutes of scan time but still maintains spatial resolution and signal-to noise ratio (SNR) on par with standard-of-care studies. Intraoperative neuromonitoring is crucial because it continuously tracks neural function during spine, head, neck, and brain surgery, helping to prevent neurological damage. By providing real-time feedback on the integrity of critical nerves and brain areas, it enhances surgical precision and safety. This monitoring allows surgeons to make immediate adjustments, minimizing the risk of complications and improving patient outcomes. Ultimately, it plays a key role in preserving neurological health and ensuring a successful recovery. “To remain relevant, Time to think and act differently” Some disciplines are technically complex and require many years to master … (bridge building, brain surgery) … Many however, are not. And yet, they are often veiled in a certain mystique – a legacy from a different era. Time to make strategy and numbers simple and practical so that everyone can relate and participate. For the most part, neither of those disciplines is technically complex. If you’re a leader looking for a better way to engage your team more fully in strategic reviews, reach out. At Bamboo we’ve designed a simple, intuitive strategy framework that anyone can understand. It’s exhilarating to facilitate discussions where literally the “lights go on” as everyone “gets it” and can finally participate in the discussion. No one should feel like an outsider. “Grow strong, straight, together” #peopleengagement #empowerment #teambuilding #leadershipdevelopment #businessstrategy #culturaltransformation #innovation

Our 2025 Research Projects 🔍 Macular holes (MHs) can be treated with vitrectomy surgery, and predicting how well a patient’s vision will recover is important for clinical decision-making. The size of the macular hole, measured with OCT imaging, can help predict visual recovery, but current methods have limitations. Machine Learning and Deep Learning approaches have been used to classify macular diseases from OCT images, but predicting visual outcomes after MH surgery has been less explored. This project aims to use advanced ML/DL techniques, informed by clinical knowledge, to better predict visual recovery after MH surgery. You can find further details on this innovative project here: https://lnkd.in/e95R-nvZ Follow this link to find out more about Heather Yorston and her research: https://lnkd.in/ekNcyDBz
