Courage & Vulnerability I was lucky enough to see Brené Brown speak at the Global Sales Kick off in San Francisco, when I was at Facebook, it was a speech that changed my world. I wanted to share with you a clip from her talk, she goes into further depth on Courage in her book Daring Greatly. This passage she quotes from Theodore Roosevelt had a profound affect on me. “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.… —Theodore Roosevelt” ― Brené Brown, Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead I want to be brave with my life I want to be courageous (Sheryl Kline, M.A. CHPC ), I want to be in the arena, I want to be seen in my life, it takes being vulnerable. And when we make the choice to dare greatly, we sign up to get our ass kicked. We can choose courage or we can choose comfort, but we can't have both. You will get criticised, but if you aren't in the arena with me getting your ass kicked, I am not interested in your feedback unless its constructive. Stepping into the arena, being brave, and daring to be vulnerable takes courage, whether I succeed or fail, but it’s the only way to truly grow and contribute in meaningful ways. I’ve found that the most helpful insights come through genuine connection and rapport. If feedback is shared before that connection is established, it can feel like judgement rather than support. For me, I often hold back from sharing ideas until I know the space between us is real and respectful, ensuring the conversation is productive and helpful. This message is for both the person on the field and the critic. To the person on the field—know that the risk is always worth it when it’s done with heart and purpose. And to the critic—use your heart and have purpose when engaging someone on the battlefield. What motivates YOU

Designing for yourself, not the user: It happens more often than you think. Here are 6 signs you might be doing this - they apply to product as well as service design: 1. **Lack of User Research** Starting without deep research into your audience's needs means you rely on assumptions. This can lead to designs that miss user expectations. 2. **Personal Bias in Design** Using your own preferences and biases can make the design intuitive for you but confusing for users. Remember, your taste is not universal. 3. **Ignoring User Feedback** If you don't seek or disregard user feedback, you're focusing on your vision, not user needs. This can make your design fail to solve real user problems. 4. **Assuming User Knowledge** Assuming users know as much about the product as you do can make the interface complex and hard to navigate. Users need simplicity, not intricacy. 5. **Lack of Usability Testing** Skipping usability tests means missing out on how real users interact with your product. Without this, your assumptions might not match user behavior. 6. **Designing in Isolation** Keeping the design process secretive and away from user input leads to a product reflecting your perspective, not the users'. This creates a disconnect between the product and its audience. Be humble and *prioritize experience* over personal preferences.
