The steel sector and its stakeholders are rapidly waking up to the decarbonization challenge, including the need to improve the cost position of lower carbon technology pathways, reduce supply chain emissions, and ensure a just low carbon transition. For steelmakers looking to decarbonize, low-carbon steelmaking does not necessarily need to reach cost parity with BF-BOF steel to be competitive, as increasing numbers of steel buyers are willing to pay a green premium for low-carbon steel and more government support becomes available to fund decarbonization. Steel producers, the power sector, raw material suppliers, policymakers, steel buyers, and financial institutions can all play their part in accelerating steel decarbonization by taking the following actions: Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eshXw66U #GreenSteel #Decarbonization #LowCarbon Silvian Baltac, Ignacio Rabsiun Aramburu, Thomas Butler, Yamini Panchaksharam

Steel production covered by companies’ decarbonisation targets All of the top 10 companies have net-zero targets, except for one company that has an intermediary target for 2030 (Figure 4). Hence, a large share of global steel production is covered by decarbonisation targets. The companies with no targets tend to be smaller relative to others in the sample of companies. Join us on 8 August, for the upcoming webinar in collaboration with Steel Times International. Our experts: Miller Wang, Charvi Trivedi, Priyanka Agrawal and Sushmita Vazirani will provide insights into key issues within the steel industry, including: - Are steel producers prepared to don the armour of decarbonization? What policy support will propel them forward? - How will the steel industry realistically trim its carbon footprint? Will cleaner metallics like DRI and scrap become the coveted gems of tomorrow? - What is the progress on green steel-making technologies like hydrogen-based steelmaking and CCUS? - Will DRI–ESF–BOF take the front seat among new technologies? The EU flat steel market has undergone many changes in 2010-2023, driven by economic crises, the pandemic and geopolitical factors. Despite all the challenges, European producers continue to adapt to the new environment. At the same time, it is difficult for them to compete with steel companies from other countries, given different approaches to environmental regulation and different levels of access to key raw materials. About the EU flat steel market in 2010-2023 – read in the new infographic🔽 https://lnkd.in/gkWNrdX2 #GMKCenter #Ukraine #steelmakers #steel #metals #war #EU #Europe #markets #export #import #globalsteel #flatsteel #electricity #energy #prices #industry #investments
