Whose crown have you adjusted lately? Recently, I offered to pay more than the normal retail price for a custom product, to someone who wasn't used to making custom products. It wasn't my first time adjusting a queen's crown, and it certainly won't be my last. Why? Because women supporting women in business is TRANSFORMATIVE. Offering a premium for a custom product seemed like a no-brainer to me, but it shocked the hobbyist. She was on the other side trying to figure out how to charge less because she thought even at regular price what I'd asked for was too expensive! A business coach once gave me the confidence and nudge to increase my prices, and I've committed to passing that confidence on. Paying a fair price is my way of "fixing another queen's crown." Rather than engaging in undercutting and tough negotiations, I choose to uplift and fairly compensate fellow entrepreneurs. I barely even negotiate at yard sales! I know for some, this approach is radical (Hi, it's me, I'm the anti-hero remember?) but it promotes the sustainability and growth of small businesses. I'm working really hard to unlearn my capitalist indoctrination and grow a feminist and anti-capitalist business. This is one small step along the path. About this exact time last week, I had the honour to be part of a discussion panel on Excellence and Innovation at the Lafarge Africa Plc commercial conference. It was held shortly after the renowned multi award winning fashion entrepreneur Mai Atafo had delivered a lecture on the same topic sharing his very inspirational stories on his journey to entrepreneurship and global recognitions. Some of my take home from both sessions were that : - Excellence does not happen by chance, it is intentional, tough, sacrificial, involves alot if learning and unlearning, and it is a continuous journey. - Innovation is not necessarily technology, although that aids the delivery in most cases. However, an improvement in the ways and manner we approach our business, task, objectives and vision is simply being innovative. - You are your own brand, whether as an individual, employee, entrepreneur, techpreneur and so on. once you are know for Excellence, smart work, integrity, forward thinking and all the positive attributes, it becomes the first thing that crosses people's mind when your name is mentioned, your name (brand) would even cross people's mind when any of those words come up. - You do not need to have all the knowledge to start but you must continually improve, know your craft, industry intelligence, always look out for ways to be better and spot issues before even become one. Mr Mai Atafo talked about how he didn't think his suits were perfect yet his customers thought it was the best, he was restless till he fixed that which only him had noticed , top notch service, value for money and class was and still is what his brand stands for.
