In the era of ubiquitous Wi-Fi, understanding the equipment that brings internet to our devices—be it phones, PCs, or gaming consoles—is crucial. At the heart of our internet connectivity is the modem, which translates the signals from cable lines into a digital format that our devices can use. Essentially, "modem" stands for modulation-demodulation. For those looking to connect multiple devices, a router becomes essential. The best Wi-Fi routers not only serve as a hub for your Wi-Fi devices but also function as Ethernet switches for wired connections. Some may prefer integrated router-modem units, often known as gateways, which simplify the setup but might limit customization. 🔗 Why Modems Matter: Your ISP uses different types of cables (like coaxial for cable internet or phone lines for DSL) that don’t directly connect to routers. Modems are necessary to convert these signals into a format that routers can handle. For cable internet users, choosing a modem that supports the DOCSIS 3.1 protocol is advisable for optimal speed and longevity. Those with fiber connections typically use an ONT, while 5G home internet users will rely on specific gateways provided by their ISPs. 💡 Should You Rent or Buy? While ISPs often promote renting modems and routers for ease of use and support, the costs can add up post-promotional periods. Renting might be hassle-free, but buying your own modem and router can be more cost-effective in the long run and allows for a personalized network setup, crucial for those with specific needs like gaming. Whether you’re setting up a new connection or thinking about upgrading your network equipment, knowing your needs and the right questions to ask can save you both time and money. 📢 Have you checked your setup recently? Ever feel like your internet is stuck in slow motion? Let's explore some common reasons behind slow Wi-Fi and how to get things running smoothly again. In the Home 🏡 : Multiple devices and users on WiFi can slow down your connection. Disconnect unused devices and limit streaming during peak hours. Your Equipment 🛠️ : Outdated routers and modems might not handle modern internet speeds. Upgrading your equipment might be a worthwhile investment. Location 📍 : The placement of your router matters! Walls and electronics can weaken the signal. Try moving your router to a central location and away from other devices. Your Service Provider 🌐 : Check your internet plan – are you getting the speeds you're paying for? Some providers throttle speeds after you reach your data limit. Consider upgrading your plan or switching providers if necessary. The Big Network 🕸️ : The type of internet connection you have (ADSL, Fibre, etc.) can affect speed. Fibre offers the fastest speeds, while options like satellite internet can be slower. Exploring the Web 🌏 : The location of the website you're trying to access can impact speed. Information from another country will take longer to load. ISPs must ensure that all these factors are addressed to provide a good end-user broadband experience. Today, most high-speed broadband providers use GPON technology with multi-band Wi-Fi routers. These routers help deliver the required throughput to the end user. Jaze ISP Manager simplifies GPON device deployment and monitoring, giving you a clear view of your network's health. It pinpoints where issues lie by tracking connected devices, analyzing Wi-Fi signal strength, and gauging fibre optic power levels. This translates to faster troubleshooting, happier customers, and a smoother overall experience. #GPON #NetworkManagement #Networkspeed

Best routers to boost your Wi-Fi signal Internet service providers (ISPs) generally include a router free of charge or for a fee with their fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) offerings, but these are often quite basic. However, prominent brands like TP-Link, Netgear, and ASUS produce a wide range of more powerful routers that can help meet your home Wi-Fi network needs. MyBroadband looked for some of the best routers and mesh Wi-Fi systems that South Africans can buy to boost their Wi-Fi signal and included options for various budgets. These devices promise better Wi-Fi performance and often improve network speeds, produce a more stable connection, and provide enhanced features. We included the TP-Link Archer C80 in the comparison for those not looking to break the bank. The router is available for R1,155 from FirstShop and offers max speeds of up to 1,300Mbps, with four external antennas. In comparison, typical routers included with FTTH packages only offer speeds up to 500Mbps and fewer antennas. Notably, it is the only option included with the 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) standard. All the other options offer newer technologies. South Africans can get the TP-Link Archer AX73 for R3,499 from Incredible. The device features six antennas, Wi-Fi standard 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6), and speeds of up to 4,804Mbps. The router features 128MB NAND flash storage and 512MB of RAM for firmware.

I am currently reviewing the EnGenius Technologies ECW536, their flagship WiFi 7 access point, which has recently been discounted from $1000 to $500. There are a growing number of options on the market, and we have finally started to see some affordable options launched. This comparison looks at the flagship high-performance options from EnGenius, Zyxel, Netgear and Ruijie. They are all 4x4 MIMO access points, allowing them to handle high-capacity workloads, and they all feature at least one 10GbE port. While WiFi 6E could achieve real-world speeds of up to 1600Mbps from my previous reviews, I have been able to get up to 3600Mbps with the 6GHz band on the EnGenius and you should be able to achieve a higher throughput with Multi-Link Operation (MLO). #WiFi #Networking #WLAN #Engenius #Zyxel #Netgear #Ruijie #technology #Homeoffice #ComputerNetworking #ITInfrastructure #NetworkEngineering
