Commonly known as ESA BICs, the ESA Business Incubation Centres are the largest network of incubators supporting #space-related start-ups in #Europe. The main objective of the network, which will celebrate its first 20 years in 2024, is to support entrepreneurs with a space-based #business idea and help them developing their product while getting their company off the ground. In the process, the ESA BICs create and grow clusters of space-related start-ups across Europe. Through each #incubation centre, the network provides excellent opportunities to connect young innovative companies with new business partners across Europe. This October, the global space community gathered in Milan for historic 75th IAC2024, a week packed with insightful presentations, collaborative discussions, and meaningful business opportunities. The European Space Agency - ESA commercialisation team had the privilege of hosting a session dedicated to promoting the ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC) Network in Italy, part of ESA and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana's commitment to supporting space-focused entrepreneurship in Italy. The ESA BIC Network continues to grow, providing essential resources like funding, technical expertise, access to finance and business mentorship to start-ups, aiming to commercialise space technologies. From the Regione Lazio to recent expansions in Turin, Brindisi, Padua and Milan, the Italian ESA BICs are positioning start-ups to drive innovation and create impactful solutions across sectors. Here the key highlights of the ESA BIC Network session: - The dialogue featured Matteo Coletta, Head of sector - Study centre and NewSpace economy, who shared Italian Space Agency's steadfast commitment to empowering space entrepreneurs in Italy with bold and risk taking strategies. - Luca del Monte, Head of ESA’s Commercialisation Services Department, emphasised the growing role of ESA BICs in fostering collaboration and bridging the gap between space technology and commercial markets. - Ritesh Jain as the moderator, who shared an overview of the ESA BICs' 20-year journey, tracing their evolution and impact across Europe. This was followed by presentations from the dedicated managers of each ESA BIC in Italy, along with ESA Technology Broker in Italy, who showcased their programmes, resources, and the success stories of startups they have supported: - ESA BIC Lazio (Lazio Innova) - ESA BIC Turin - ESA BIC Brindisi - ESA BIC Milan - ESA BIC Padua - ESA Technology Broker Italy (STAM S.r.l.) The audience left inspired by the stories of entrepreneurs making strides in fields ranging from Earth Observation to sustainable energy solutions, all supported by the strong foundation ESA BICs provide. 🚀 The European Space Agency 🌌 opens ideas factory to boost space innovation in Austria 🇦🇹 A centre to innovate the design and manufacture of space hardware has today opened in Vienna. Driving commercialisation in space, it is the first of its kind of ESA-backed disruptive innovation centres outside ESA’s own premises. Work at the centre will focus on accelerating the development of manufacturing for space, including the rapid prototyping of new materials, propulsion systems and making spacecraft and satellites. Austrian companies will be able to join the Austrian ‘Phi-Lab’, along with European partners that can demonstrate that they are bringing value to Austria, as well as universities, institutes and research centres. The lab will be managed by accent, which is a high-tech incubator for Lower Austria, in collaboration with Brimatech, a Vienna-based market research and consulting company, and tecnet-tt, a technology transfer organisation. They will be joined by consultants Enspace and Vienna Airport, which is providing office space. ESA will work closely with Phi-Lab Austria to establish the operations of the centre, to select the first projects and to link those projects with relevant ESA expertise. The call for ideas will open soon and the selection of the first successful applications for seed funding will take place in June. Today we present one of the latest start-ups to join the ESA BIC Turin community: Ecosmic, whose mission is to convert idle resources into revenues through #software solutions for #satellites! Ecosmic aims to introduce the concept of #upcycling in space with its easily integrable and modular software solutions, towards the goal of enabling a more cost-effective and sustainable #space industry. The start-up’s first product, SAFE, addresses the space traffic management issue, significantly reducing operators' workload by streamlining the entire collision avoidance process.
