🚀 WISS Meets Linn Friis-Liby, R&D Engineer - Young Graduate Trainee at ESTEC, ESA! ⭐What are you working with at ESA? I’m working within Technology Programme Management, we manage some of ESA’s Space Technology R&D efforts for supporting and strengthening the European space industry. I mainly work with building data driven solutions for project management as well as researching novel technologies. It’s highly rewarding and ESTEC is a great place to be surrounded by expertise and perspectives on everything space. ⭐Why is space important? Space is important for a fair few practical reasons, such as cutting-edge technology that can be directly applied for the benefit of society. But I think the main reason for why most of us want to work with space-related areas is that it’s ceaselessly exciting and meaningful. Space encompasses philosophy, science, technology and exploration – and so provides a fundamental, intrinsic motivation that makes it very easy to find joy in the work. ⭐Which are your tips to those who want to work in the space sector? My advice would be to focus on areas that genuinely interest you. The sector is vast and varied, and there are more than just STEM roles. Research and align your interests and skills with potential roles, understand the career trajectories of professionals in the field, and don't hesitate to connect and ask questions. If you take a path that didn’t turn out as expected – try again. ⭐How do you handle setbacks and tough times in your work? You have to allow yourself room to grow as well as rely on yourself and people near you to help regulate your perspective. I don’t want any situation to impact me in such a way that I could no longer be kind and enthusiastic. Being kind includes being kind to yourself, setting an example and daring to grow. I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful people in the industry all the way from university and onwards, that have helped me find great opportunities. As working in the space sector is a privilege, it should always feel like it’s purposeful and fulfilling. 🚀 Thank's for talking to us and we wish you the best of luck in your career Linn! #womeninspacesweden #womeninspace #wiss #wissmeets #linnfriisliby #estec #ygtesa

I'm thrilled to announce that just a few days ago, I validated my first year master at Grenoble INP - Phelma with my internship project in collaboration with LEPMI Laboratory Grenoble. I had the incredible opportunity to work under the guidance of the professors Marian Chatenet and Antoine Bonnefont. For four months, I explored the promising potential of a Gas Diffusion Electrode (GDE) as a valuable tool to characterize catalysts for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis (AEMWE). We've shown that using a Rotating Disk Electrode (RDE) to study hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) isn't the best approach. This is because an RDE is very limited by bubble evacuation, also it has been highlighted that it can induce measurement artifacts, especially when studying the durability of catalysts. The GDE setup has proved to be an effective tool to characterize catalysts without being very limited by bubble evacuation, reaching high current densities (≈1 A/cm²) and since that GDE environment is closer to a real AEMWE, more reliable results are obtained. I am looking forward to futures projects around water electrolysis that allows us to get closer to a sustainable transition with the production of green hydrogen!

Last week I invited Alberto Babbini to give a presentation to the Innovation Management class of the MoS in Engineering Management. Alberto coordinates the Open Innovation team of IET (Industrial Energy Technology) division of Baker Hughes, and so he told us how this team develops world-wide collaborations with research centres and start-ups, in domains such as technologies for CO2 capture and Green H2 production. This team includes experts of different fields with Ph.D., so as to cover all these domains. Was really funny to see the faces of my students, that usually believe that a PhD is just for wanna-be professors (and geeks). Alberto also highlighted the practices they put in place for technology scouting, up to TRL3-4. One of the takeaways concerns the challenge of determining what is the right balance of resources (and energy) for exploration and exploitation. How do we decide which new ideas are worthy of evaluation, PoC development, budget allocation? How can we establish the right trade-off, so as not to lack time in managing the most promising pilot projects? Today, fortunately, the evaluation process can be partly-automated using AI. This is the goal of the internship project of Lapo Mazzetti Chilleri, one of our student. Paolo Noccioni Paolo Ruggeri Marco Pierini Stefano Terzi
