924-Megawatt Sunrise Wind Project Receives Final Approval from U.S. Department of the Interior Sunrise Wind, New York’s largest offshore wind project, has received approval of its Construction and Operations Plan (COP) from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), which is the final decision needed from the federal agency to move the project toward the start of offshore construction. At 924 megawatts, Sunrise Wind will generate enough clean energy to power nearly 600,000 New York homes. Sunrise Wind will help New York achieve its mandate of 70 percent renewable electricity by 2030, while accelerating the state’s growing offshore wind workforce and supply chain. Sunrise Wind will create 800 direct New York jobs, thousands of indirect jobs, and economic benefits from the Capital Region to Long Island – including a $700 million investment in Suffolk County alone. https://lnkd.in/gM7GApQC

Massachusetts and Rhode Island have selected 2,878 MW of offshore wind capacity from three projects developed by OW Ocean Winds, Avangrid Inc (NYSE:AGR), and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). The selection was part of the first coordinated multi-state offshore wind procurement in the US, involving Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Massachusetts selected 2,678 MW from three projects -- a 1,087-MW portion of the 1,287-MW SouthCoast Wind multi-state project, 100% of the 791-MW New England Wind 1 project, and up to 800 MW of the 1,200-MW Vineyard Wind 2 project. Rhode Island, in turn, will be taking the remaining 200 MW from SouthCoast Wind. The selected developers will now start contract negotiations with the relevant utilities. SouthCoast Wind is owned by Ocean Winds, a 50/50 joint venture owned by EDP Renewables (ELI:EDPR) and ENGIE SA (EPA:ENGI). It aims to supply power to the region by 2030. New England Wind 1, formerly known as Park City Wind, is being developed by Iberdrola SA's (BME:IBE) subsidiary Avangrid. It will border Vineyard Wind 1, which is currently under construction. New England Wind 1 could begin construction in 2025 and reach full commercial operation in 2029. Vineyard Wind 2 project is proposed by CIP’s Vineyard Offshore. It was announced in March that the tri-state tender had attracted several bidders. In August, the bid selection date was extended by 30 days. Massachusetts said the selection brings it closer to its statutory target to procure 5,600 MW of offshore wind by 2027. Rhode Island, meanwhile, will increase its offshore wind portfolio to 630 MW with the new project. “This selection is New England's and Massachusetts’ largest offshore wind selection to date. We'll power 1.4 million more Massachusetts homes with clean, renewable energy, create thousands of good, union jobs, and generate billions of dollars in economic activity. The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has completed its environmental review of the 2.6 GW New England Wind offshore wind project, proposed to be built in a lease area off Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York. BOEM has now published a final environmental impact statement (FEIS) for the project and expects to issue a record of decision (ROD) in April. New England Wind is a phased project being developed by Park City Wind, a project company owned by Avangrid, the US arm of the Spanish renewable energy developer Iberdrola, within an area adjacent to Vineyard Wind 1, the first large-scale offshore wind farm under construction in the US. Phase 1 is the Park City Wind offshore wind farm, which will have an installed capacity of at least 804 MW. Phase 2 is Commonwealth Wind, planned to have an installed capacity of up to 1,725 MW, according to the documents at BOEM. The two-phased project plan submitted for federal approval includes up to 129 wind turbines and up to five offshore export cables that would transmit electricity to onshore transmission systems in the Town of Barnstable and Bristol County, Massachusetts. Avangrid had already secured power purchase agreements (PPAs) for the two projects with the state electric distribution companies in Massachusetts (for Commonwealth Wind) and Connecticut (for Park City Wind). However, the developer terminated both PPAs last year, with plans to re-enter the projects into new state solicitations. On the federal level, the approval process has been underway since 2021. The developer submitted a construction and operation plan (COP) in July 2020 and, following initial review, BOEM started the environmental review in the summer of 2021. In December 2022, BOEM published a draft EIS, initiating a 60-day public comment period that closed in February 2023, through which the federal agency received input and feedback that informed the now-issued final EIS. The two projects making up New England Wind were being developed by Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) until 2021, when the two partners restructured their 50/50 joint venture in the United States and Avangrid Renewables took over the lease rights for the two offshore wind projects. #renewableenergy #wind #carbon60 #engineering #offshorewind #energy #america #usa

Multi-disciplinary engineering and consultancy BOSLAN Ingeniería y Consultoría and offshore and engineering specialist, Global Maritime, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, allowing collaboration within the fast paced and growing offshore renewables sector. The agreement is a continuation of the relationship established in offshore wind energy projects, in which both companies have individually provided engineering and consulting services for many years.   This agreement allows both parties to expand the services that each company can offer to their clients, as well as leveraging the strengths of both organizations in an agile manner to identify, secure and collaborate in new opportunities. Through the collaboration between Boslan and Global Maritime the companies can support their clients throughout the complete lifecycle of an offshore infrastructure project.   With approximately 20GW of offshore wind committed to by 2030 across Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece, the agreement symbolises the latest step from Global Maritime and Boslan to support #offshorewind growth across the Mediterranean region and beyond. https://lnkd.in/ew5H33hD

Ocean Winds celebrates the installation of the final turbine at the Moray West offshore wind farm in Scotland, marking a major step towards full commissioning scheduled for 2025. This project highlights technological innovations and significant economic impacts. The Moray West project, developed by OW Ocean Winds, has reached a critical milestone with the successful installation of the 60th and final Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD turbine in the Moray Firth, northern Scotland. This turbine, equipped with “Power Boost” technology, boasts a maximum capacity of 14.7 MW, making it the largest commercially operational turbine in Europe. With a total capacity of 882 MW, the Moray West wind farm is nearing the completion of its construction phase. Commercial operation is scheduled for 2025, adhering to the original timeline. Once operational, Ocean Winds will become the leading offshore wind operator in Scotland, solidifying its role in the country’s energy transition. The Moray West project is delivering substantial benefits to the local economy. Over 1,500 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) job years were created in Scotland during the construction phases, with more than 60 long-term roles based in Buckie. Furthermore, half of the investments and operating costs will directly benefit the UK economy. Pete Geddes, the project director, praised the teams’ performance: “This project has pushed the boundaries of technological innovation and execution. 🌊 Netherlands Awards 4GW Offshore Wind Tender in Largest Licensing Round Yet! Yesterday marked a significant achievement as the Netherlands announced the winners of a major offshore wind tender, awarding a combined 4 GW capacity to Vattenfall, CIP (Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners), and SSE Renewables. The awarded capacity involves the development of two separate projects, IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Ijmuiden Ver Beta, each contributing 2 GW, located approximately 62 km off the Dutch coast in the North Sea. The sites are expected to be commissioned in 2029 and come with a secured grid connection to be built by grid operator TenneT. Interestingly, this tender also witnessed a notable focus on factors such as sustainability, system integration, and innovation that counted for a lot under the tendering mechanism accompanied by the financial bid. All 122 turbines that will form the initial 756MW phase of the expansive Golden Plains wind farm in Victoria now have their concrete foundations laid. This significant milestone paves the way for the project to commence generating power later this year. In an update shared on LinkedIn, TagEnergy, the project developer, announced the completion of the final concrete pours at the site in Rokewood, Victoria's southwest, by contractor MPC Kinetic. This wind farm, expected to span up to 1.3GW, will also incorporate a large-scale battery. The LinkedIn post celebrates MPC Kinetic's pivotal role in what is poised to become Australia's largest wind farm. It highlights the completion of 122 foundations, from the initial pour in July 2023 to the recent milestone, achieved through a collaborative effort. With an average of three foundations poured each week, the project remains on track to deliver renewable energy to the grid later this year, thanks to the concerted efforts of all involved. The installation of the first 6.2MW Vestas turbine in February stands as another notable achievement, accomplished in just six days. This turbine, towering at 149 meters with 79-meter-long blades, sets the stage for the project's future operations. Additionally, the Golden Plains Wind Farm - East has secured a second Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Equinix, a digital infrastructure company. Under this agreement, Equinix will purchase 20% of the energy and green certificates (LGCs) generated from the wind farm. The Australian government has authorized six feasibility licenses for the development of offshore wind projects near Gippsland, Victoria. One license has been granted for Ørsted's initial project, with plans to grant another pending First Nations consultation. These licenses give Orsted exclusive rights to develop two offshore wind areas, with an estimated combined capacity of 4.8GW of renewable energy. Other companies, such as Mainstream Renewable Power, Reventus Power, AGL Energy, DIRECT Infrastructure JV Gippsland Skies Offshore Wind, and Southerly Ten, have also secured feasibility licenses for offshore wind projects in the Gippsland region of Victoria. These projects will undergo detailed studies, environmental surveys, and consultation processes, with the aim of contributing to Victoria's offshore wind targets.   Iberdrola stated that the analysis of the Aurora Green offshore wind site has been ongoing for nearly three years. It has the potential to accommodate up to 3GW of offshore capacity, with all turbines positioned more than 25km away from the Gippsland coastline.
