Tick Paralysis: A Rare but Serious Health Threat Tick paralysis is a critical issue that bridges the fields of veterinary medicine, human health, and public health. This condition, caused by neurotoxins released from the salivary glands of certain tick species during prolonged attachment, is often overlooked. However, if left untreated, it can lead to severe outcomes, including paralysis and even respiratory failure. We are proud to share that our very own Hany Elsheikha from University of Nottingham has published a comprehensive review on tick paralysis. This detailed review sheds light on this rare but life-threatening condition, emphasizing the urgent need for greater awareness, timely diagnosis, and effective prevention strategies. The review aims to spark vital conversations and equip veterinarians, healthcare professionals, and communities with the tools they need to safeguard both animal and human health. 📖 Read the full review here: https://lnkd.in/dAthNtVp Together, let’s raise awareness and take action to mitigate the risks of tick paralysis. Research from our School of Veterinary Medicine suggests that racehorse performance is linked to gut health. The research found that foals with higher bacterial diversity at one month show better athletic performance results and reduced health issues. The study highlights the importance of responsible antibiotic use, as early antibiotic treatment can reduce gut bacteria diversity, which is associated with poorer performance and increased respiratory disease risk. Blood Transfusion in Cat 🩸🐈 Blood transfusion in cats is a critical procedure used to treat severe blood loss, anemia, or certain medical conditions. It involves transferring blood or blood components from a healthy donor cat to the recipient cat. Compatibility testing is crucial to avoid adverse reactions. Transfusions are typically done under veterinary supervision and may require careful monitoring for any signs of complications such as transfusion reactions or clotting disorders. #CatBloodTransfusion #FelineBloodDonation #VeterinaryMedicine #PetBloodDonor #CatHealthcare #FelineHealth #CatEmergencyCare #AnimalBloodBank #PetHealthcare

🔍 Case Study: Managing Hypothyroidism and Urinary Obstruction in a Pitbull 🐾 I had the opportunity to work with a Pitbull diagnosed with hypothyroidism who presented with a urinary obstruction. This combination of conditions poses unique challenges, but it's a reminder of the importance of comprehensive veterinary care. After a thorough examination and diagnostic workup, we proceeded with catheterization to relieve the urinary obstruction. This immediate intervention is crucial to prevent further complications and improve the dog’s comfort. As we continue to manage his hypothyroidism with appropriate medication and dietary adjustments, it’s essential to monitor his urinary health closely. This case underscores the significance of understanding how underlying health issues can influence overall well-being in our canine patients. I’m grateful for the ongoing learning experiences that veterinary medicine provides, and I look forward to sharing more insights as I continue my journey in this field. #VeterinaryMedicine #Pitbull #Hypothyroidism #UrinaryHealth #VeterinaryCare #ContinuousLearning

vtx:think Cough and you will miss it. Respiratory tract disease in dogs and cats can be linked to bacterial infections, either primary or secondary, and often leads to the use, and sometimes the incorrect or excessive use, of antimicrobials. Unlike human medicine, there is a lack of comprehensive treatment guidelines in veterinary medicine for these conditions. To address this gap, the International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases assembled a Working Group comprising clinical microbiologists, pharmacologists, and internists. Their aim was to share experiences, analyze scientific data, review clinical trials, and formulate guidelines to aid veterinarians in selecting appropriate antimicrobial treatments for managing bacterial respiratory diseases in dogs and cats. Are you ready to breathe easier for your respiratory cases? Did you know BVD is often associated with pneumonia? BVD is a viral disease which is widespread, and most herds are at risk of infection. The signs can vary but BVD is most likely to appear as acute, severe sickness, with bloody diarrhoea and a high fever and often pneumonia. Abortions, infertility and embryonic deaths associated with BVD lead to significantly reduced reproductive performance and increased premature culling. But, when cattle are vaccinated and not heavily stressed, the disease is much less severe! #bvdfree #cattle #protectyourherd #ukfarming Source: Bovine Viral Diarrhea: Background, Management and Control | Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine
