🇵🇸 We strongly condemn the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip, a tragic outcome of decades of unchecked violence and systemic injustice driven by Israel’s occupation and apartheid policies. More than 100 human rights organizations and advocates have called upon States, international organizations, and civil society actors to intensify their efforts to uphold human rights, promote accountability, and dismantle systems of imperialism and colonialism that continue to obstruct global justice. ✊🌎 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gdDcUWZ7

Since #Russia invaded #Ukraine in 2022, there have been calls for frozen Russian assets held in the UK to be seized, for example, to help fund the war effort or even for oligarchs' mansions to house Ukrainian refugees. Two years on, much of this rhetoric has remained just that. Anna Bradshaw spoke to POLITICO about the legal standing to seize frozen Russian assets, saying that “the British government is unlikely to be comfortable forging a brave new legal order”. The International Court of Justice declared that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory “is unlawful”, and that “all States are under an obligation not to recognise” the decades-long occupation. The Court on Friday, was responding to a request for an advisory opinion by the General Assembly on the legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem. The advisory from the ICJ is a legal opinion provided by the Court on questions of international law. Unlike judgments in contentious cases between States, advisory opinions are non-binding and are sought by United Nations bodies such as the General Assembly or the Security Council. While not legally binding, advisory opinions can shape international policies, increase moral pressure, and unilateral measures adopted by individual States such as sanctions. In its advisory opinion, the ICJ concluded that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful and that it is under an obligation to bring to an end its unlawful presence “as rapidly as possible.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ebmz9mR7 #news #icymi #icj #israel #palestine #un #thehague #netherlands

The escalation of violence in Palestine and Lebanon represents a critical moment for the international community, threatening the credibility of our foundational principles and legal frameworks. Support from major global powers for ongoing war crimes and Israel's unlawful attacks and killings of civilians has further destabilized the region. All nations must unequivocally condemn violations of international law and ensure respect for humanitarian principles that protect civilian lives. Transformative Peace calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, alongside a steadfast commitment to the equal application of international humanitarian law. Only through a unified approach can we restore trust and foster lasting peace. It is imperative that we reaffirm our shared values and ensure freedom, justice, and human dignity for all.

I strongly condemn the rogue, provocative actions of United Kingdom MP Iain Duncan Smith to start a campaign for direct flights between the UK and the illegal so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” entity. The illegal entity is the result of the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey in 1974, and the ongoing occupation of the northern part of our country. Such actions violate the rule of law, UN Security Council resolutions and the values that unite European countries. Every attempt at upgrading the status of the illegal and unrecognised entity is despicable and against the international law order of the democratic world. I further condemn the statements of MP Iain Duncan Smith regarding the humanitarian aspect of the problem, which ignore the reality that Turkey is violating the human rights of Cypriot citizens for 50 years, in the same way Russia is violating the rights of Ukranians by occupying their sovereign territory and continuing the war of aggression against a free, internationally recognised country. MP Duncan provocatively wore a ribbon showing support to Ukraine while visiting the occupied territories of Cyprus. You cannot condemn an act of aggression in one part of Europe and support it in another. Cyprus deserves the same commitment and respect in regards to our human and sovereign rights, as every other nation in the world, and I expect the British government and the Conservative Party of the UK to respond to this despicable act in the most definitive way. #Cyprus #MEP #Europe #Cyproblem #HumanRights

🇵🇸 🇪🇺🕊 Follow-Up to an Open-Letter Demanding Accountability From the EU Leadership for Complicity in Genocide Dear President von der Leyen, Dear President Michel, Dear High Representative Borrell, We here at Geneva International Peace Research Institute - GIPRI in Geneva are coming back to you on the matter of a ceasefire in Gaza. We have had no response from you on our previous communications, the most recent of which dated 15th March has already been published as an open letter. We have noted your condemnation in recent days of Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon of war, and your acknowledgment that the famine conditions we now see in Gaza are entirely man-made as a result of Israel’s war of aggression. This is a welcome position, but it is still not strong enough. Why is there still no call for a ceasefire? Why no call for sanctions on Israel? Why no condemnation of the slaughter of hundreds of aid seekers murdered in cold blood? The EU was very quick to sanction Russia two years ago. Israel’s crimes are infinitely worse, yet there is no call from the EU for them to suspend their violations of international law. 📰 Read more... / source: CounterPunch: https://lnkd.in/euKgrYKd #gaza #palestine #internationallaw #humanrights #europeanunion #EUcommission #EUparliament

🌐 Addressing Transnational Repression 🌐 Governments worldwide must come together in multilateral forums to raise awareness about transnational repression and take urgent steps to combat this pervasive issue. Transnational repression poses a serious threat by allowing states to target foreign nationals and individuals beyond their borders through surveillance, harassment, and even kidnapping. Iran stands as a notable practitioner of this concerning practice, which fundamentally undermines global human rights standards and jeopardizes the safety and freedom of individuals everywhere. We call on the international community to: 1. Highlight the impacts of transnational repression in multilateral settings. 2. Collaborate on intelligence sharing to thwart these practices. 3. Develop robust international legal frameworks to hold perpetrators accountable. 4. Support victims and their families through comprehensive assistance. Together, we can uphold human rights, protect freedom, and promote justice globally. 🌍🤝 --- https://lnkd.in/endD3NRN

Thanks for this template for my next correspondence to MPs ( most of whom are unrepentant hypocrites).
Dear parliamentarian I don’t want to know about your aid package or your funds for “affected communities” here (which by the way rarely reach people who need it). I don’t want to know about why you privately care or what you privately say or do in your party. I don’t want to know about why quiet diplomacy is the only way to prevent genocide when all the evidence shows us it is making it worse and making it possible. Please just answer Yes or No: Will you push changes in parliament to stop Australia from making and sending weapons, munitions and other parts used in a genocide when the minister refuses to apply sanctions? Will you name Israel for its atrocities in parliament, and recognise it poses an irreparable risk of widespread genocide as found by the courts? Will you call for a ceasefire and the release of thousands of Palestinian political prisoners, as if their lives matter too? Will you say in parliament that Israel is breaking the law by stealing land and using racial apartheid, as found by the courts? Will you call in parliament for Australian trade penalties against Israel for taking land that isn’t theirs? Your answers will help me to understand if you will uphold the rule of law equally. International law was made to be enforced by countries as part of a pact to protect the equal worth and dignity of every human.
