WHY ENGLISH IN HEALTHCARE? English language proficiency is important in healthcare for several reasons. Medical professionals who are proficient in English can connect and collaborate with practitioners and researchers globally, give presentations at international conferences, and even practice elsewhere in the world. Most of the world’s medical and scientific literature, such as journal articles, is written in the English language. Research has linked limited English proficiency with less care-seeking, diminished quality of and access to health services, poorer health outcomes, and even death. Accreditation and quality standards adopted by regulatory and oversight agencies now emphasize communication practices, both broadly and across languages specifically

AIMS: • To give practical ideas on implementing project work into the medical English curriculum to enhance learners´ communication skills and intercultural competence. • To present project-based learning ideas introduced into the EMP curriculum at the Department of Foreign Languages, Medical University of Bialystok, Poland. • To demonstrate the objectives of the project and describe how the tasks were developed and implemented. • To show that the application of such activities in the curriculum helps learners to develop their communication skills, but also increases their autonomy, confidence, initiative, and interpersonal skills. Franziska Förster, research associate at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany will talk about: How to not be confused - contrastive phonology in the Arabic-German context Contrastive approaches are often said to be helpful especially for LESLLA learners Yet they are not standard in the range of teaching methods in adult language and literacy teaching in Germany.   In this LESLLA Coffee Break we will try to take the perspective of an Arabic native speaker learning German as second language – while trying not to get confused. We will then explore examples of learner language data captured in the ELIKASA project 2020-2024 (see website below) and analyze L2 word writings. We sure will find clues for negative transfer, but also for graphemic solutions that demonstrate the learners’ bilingual abilities. We conclude by asking which (contrastive) exercises could be useful for LESLLA learners to crack the code on both the segmental and the suprasegmental code. You are welcome to attend.
