Sustainability in the dairy industry: What’s the real environmental impact? Our latest study highlights the crucial role animal-free dairy is playing in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. While traditional dairy is working towards ambitious 2040 targets, animal-free options are already offering significantly lower emissions today and are set to become even more efficient in the future. Note that there are nutritional differences among these products. It is expected that further research on product fortification and improved production processes can close this gap with limited climate impact. Further research is needed to establish a Nutritional Density Climate Impact score that considers the impact per nutrient and the role these products play in the broader Western diet. 💡 Curious how these differences will impact the future of dairy and sustainability? Download our full report for a deeper understanding of these key findings. 🔗 Download the full study via the link in comments. #Sustainability #GHGEmissions #Dairy2040 #AnimalFree #BrightGreenPartners #SustainableDairy #MarketInsights

Did you know that 99 per cent of the protein we consume globally still comes from unhealthy sources, with little regard for the environment?😮 The environmental and social impacts of conventional protein consumption in Europe are substantial and often overlooked. Based on our participation and findings from the EU-funded LIKE-A-PRO project, results reveal the hidden costs of our dietary choices, underscoring the need for a shift towards healthier and more sustainable protein consumption. Some key highlights: 📊 The true cost of conventional proteins, when factoring in social and environmental impacts, is significantly higher than their current wholesale prices. To bridge this gap, we need to work on value chain transparency while increasing knowledge of opportunities for change. 📊 Only 1% of global protein consumption comes from healthier and environmentally alternative sources. 📊 Meat and dairy are responsible for 83% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the average EU diet. 📊 Agriculture contributes to 93% of ammonia emissions in the EU, leading to water and soil acidification. 📊In 2022 alone, billions of animals were slaughtered, highlighting the scale of our protein consumption. It's time to rethink our food choices and consider the broader impact of what we eat. By mainstreaming alternative proteins, we can pave the way for a just protein transition. 🌱 Revealing the Hidden Costs of Conventional Proteins 🌱 The latest report from the Impact Institute as part of LIKE-A-PRO project uncovers some surprising and alarming truths about conventional protein production. 🔴 Massive Environmental Footprint: We all know that beef production is a major contributor to climate change, but this results in €5.16/kg in environmental costs mainly from methane emissions. 🔴 Social Injustices: The report highlights the unsettling realities of child labour and the chronic underpayment of workers in the conventional protein supply chain. 🔴 Animal Welfare Concerns: The monetized costs of animal suffering in industrial farming are a stark reminder of the ethical dilemmas inherent in conventional protein production. At Kinoko-Tech as part of LIKE-A-PRO project, we're on a mission to create a sustainable and ethical future with our alternative protein solutions. From niche to mainstream!

According to Foundation Earth there are currently no coherent standards for F&B product labeling based on environmental impact data in the EU. There is a lack of coordination and management by any EU-level organization, despite this being a requisite recently set out by the #EUGreenClaimsDirective.
The EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology Food will soon launch a new International Alliance for Food Impact Data with Foundation Earth to develop and test environmental impact data on food. The alliance aims to transform the environmental credentials of the food sector, aiming for a sector that benefits human and planetary #health. In the vibrant setting of the Impact Summit 2024, held at the Marriott Johannesburg Hotel, Dr. Stephan Peters, the Manager of Dairy, Nutrition, Health, and Sustainability at the Dutch Dairy Association, challenges the prevailing narrative surrounding sustainable diets. Speaking to Farm4.0 TV, he delves into a pressing question: Is there still a place for animal products in our pursuit of health and sustainability? As global conversations shift toward plant-based eating, many believe that consuming less meat is the key to reducing our environmental footprint. However, Dr. Peters presents a more nuanced perspective. His insights reveal critical considerations: while we should certainly aim to reduce our intake of imported red meat and sugary drinks, we must also prioritize local vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and maintain our current levels of dairy consumption. Join us as Dr. Peters invites us to rethink our food choices and embrace a sustainable future where both people and planet can thrive together. #Danone #Agriculture Danone
