Just wrapped up a fascinating session at the World Utilities Conference in Abu Dhabi on tackling demand disruption with sustainable and reliable supply. Here are my takeaways : 1) We need a balancing act: Energy demand will, despite efficiency efforts, continue to grow albeit with significant regional differences and a shift to electrification including significant growth in transport and data centers (driven by AI). Energy is needed to continue to prosper as a world in particular also in the Global South. Power supply will balance renewables with lower emissions thermal generation. The ultimate balance is sustainability AND affordability AND security of supply. 2) We need innovation: The path forward requires robust technological but also policy and financing innovation. Derisking large new investments under uncertainty will require creative collaboration across value chains and regions. We must focus on developing new materials but also on unlocking new supply chains. Thank you to Roberto Bocca (World Economic Forum), and IZUMI KAI (JERA) for sharing their perspectives on this topic.
