Early detection of HIE is key!
April is HIE awareness month. HIE is a complex perinatal and neonatal condition that requires prompt attention, assessment and appropriate interventions from the healthcare team. Newborns with HIE may require transfer to a higher level of care. Babies and children with HIE may also need to be referred to specialized programs and support to optimize the child’s development and quality of life. For more information, visit HIE for Hope, the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) and refer to the Acute Care of at-Risk Newborns (ACoRN) 2nd edition book.

The EMF Effect: Inspiring insights from Dr Michelle Dodds and Natasha Edwards from Redcliffe Hospital Emergency Department on their research into developing a paediatric peripheral intravenous cannulation package. Funded by an EMF Emerge grant, the project aimed to enhance the procedure for inserting intravenous cannulas in children under 16, which often causes anxiety for patients and families. The research team developed evidence-based resources, including a bedside guide and an education package, to boost clinician confidence and standardise practices. The implementation of these resources resulted in improved patient experiences, reduced clinician anxiety, and enhanced workflow efficiency. These resources have been successfully integrated into various departments at Redcliffe Hospital and have also been adopted at many sites in Queensland. Future plans include expanding the resources for broader applications in both paediatric and adult care, focusing on skills that alleviate patient anxiety during various medical procedures. Picture this: a man and woman walk into the ER at the same time. Both say they’re in pain. The man receives the appropriate pain medication. The woman is met with doubt but is nonetheless administered pain medication about half an hour later than the man. This isn’t a hypothetical situation. It’s a reality that a study found after analyzing 22,000 patient discharge notes that included pain complaints. It also concluded that: ➡️ Women were less likely than men to be prescribed necessary pain-relief treatments ➡️ Nurses were 10% less likely to record women’s pain scores upon admission to the emergency department ➡️ Nurses rated female patients’ pain as less intense than male patients And before you assume that the nurses and medical personnel were mostly male, think again. Both male and female physicians treated men's and women’s pain in the same manner. This is yet another example of how women need providers they can trust to listen, hear, and believe what they’re saying about their own bodies. Source: a recent study published in PNAS

🚨 Publication alert 🚨 Understanding Paediatric Palliative Care Needs with the ACCAPED Scale Paediatric palliative care offers comprehensive support for children with serious conditions. The ACCAPED scale, developed in Italy, helps assess their clinical needs across nine domains, guiding appropriate care. A pilot study suggests this tool may predict when a child is nearing the end of life, making it crucial for tailored support. Further research is needed to confirm its prognostic role. #PaediatricPalliativeCare #Medicalwriting #Scicomm https://bit.ly/3KDwJYR
