Last year in December, I had the pleasure of facilitating a chat with Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan, David Neichel, Paul J. Foster ☀️🌏 and Kwangjun Song The World Esports Summit was hosted in Busan, by International Esports Federation and was a fantastic forum for some of the leading stakeholders, coming together to discuss and share insights on their esports vision, despite having many overlapping interests, with a mix of Global Esports Federation, ESL FACEIT Group - EFG, Saudi Esports Federation, Esports World Cup Foundation, Savvy Games Group and BigPicture Interactive (World Cyber Games). A few takeaways from my perspective: 1️⃣ Esports has massive room for further innovation and it's only just beginning. The International Olympic Committee – IOC are not trying to own all of esports, and Esports World Cup Foundation is not trying to take it all. The Olympics coming is a sign that the mainstream are taking more attention to us, and Esports World Cup is a vision and a bit of a scale that's never been seen before in the history of gaming. They're hoping this leads to ripple effects of other people creating and the ecosystem growing and thriving as a whole. Embrace the moves, and get stuck in. 2️⃣ The future of esports is so much more than just the top-tier, trophy lifters and biggest brands. The world is a big place, internet penetration is constantly improving, new and more accessible games are launched, and the next generations are coming. Making esports thrive for the next 100 years, is about enabling grassroots in all countries, finding sustainability all the way from bottom to top, empowering the volunteers and heroes that bring healthy gaming habits and big dreams to the future generations of superstars. Huge opportunity lies in the layer below the top. 3️⃣ Healthy competition and respectful collaboration is what gets us to the next phase. We need to welcome competition, new initiatives and new takes on the industry as a whole. Constantly fighting each other for the top seat at the table is not going to work in an industry that is by design fragmented. Games are owned by publishers, and there are many different ones. In sports, federations sit on top, they don't here. It gives an amazing opportunity to build unique offerings in each game, combining the right stakeholders that creates the most value for the end users. All in all a great experience, and an absolute pleasure to assist these guys in having this talk, and a great initiative by IESF. An abundance of purpose, experience and drive sitting between them all, and I'd recommend following them all to stay updated on all the progress. So much has happened since December. With the opening of the Esports World Cup, Olympics having officially entered and more things to come, I can only imagine where we might be in another 6 months, let alone 6 years. I've been exploring the esports landscape since 2016. That Fall, we participated in a program in Las Vegas, which was aiming to be the esports capital of the world, and we explored bringing our SidePrize solution to video game contests. Ironically, coming out of the program, we were more inclined to solve the money in & money out problem of team-based tournaments (Eventbrite was the default, but insufficient solution). By 2017, I had refocused my energy on fantasy sports, and by 2019, the first professional league partnership at PrizePicks was with the SMITE Pro League. Post-pandemic, we leaned into esports in a more significant way as traditional sports (or what we call "tsports") around the world were turned off. One of my favorite expressions that originated in our community goes like "Can you explain this in [NBA] terms?" Most of the time, those questions are geared towards tsports fans who want to get into esports. Our Director of Esports Strategy Adam Boothe, SVP of Revenue Dylan Cooper & more recognized how the same resources to do your research for tsports were not nearly as prevalent for esports. As a result, we've been conceptualizing and building The Esports Lab for quite a while. For an initial product beta release, I'm super-impressed by how robust the v1 experience turned out. To integrate the streams, get all the data for multiple titles & much more was no easy feat. We're looking forward to leaving our mark in the esports ecosystem for a long time to come. The Impact of the Esports World Cup in Fortnite The Esports World Cup taking place this summer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, features an unprecedented prize pool of over $60 million, the largest in esports history, surpassing the previous $45 million record set by Gamers8 in 2023. This historic prize pool will support 20 distinct tournaments across 20+ competitive titles over eight weeks. It marks a significant step in the Esports World Cup Foundation’s efforts to grow the global esports industry and provide sustainable career options for competitive players and multidisciplinary esports clubs. The Club Championship, a unique cross-game competitive format, will award $20 million to the top 16 clubs based on their overall performance. Each club can field rosters in multiple titles, and the club with the best performance across various game championships will be crowned the first Esports World Cup Club Champions. The remaining prize pool will be divided into three categories: Game Championships, Player Bounties, and Qualifiers. Each of the 20 Game Championships will have its own prize pool totaling over $33 million. Additionally, a $50,000 MVP player bounty will be awarded to a standout participant in each competition. Fortnite alone has a prize pool of over $1 million for the finals. Thirty esports clubs from around the globe have been accepted into the Esports World Cup Foundation Club Support Program. This initiative aims to create sustainable infrastructure for multidisciplinary esports clubs. Participating organizations can receive six-figure funding to enter new esports titles at the highest level, diversify their competitive footprint, and provide more opportunities for esports athletes. Europe's most modern esports headquarters opens in Hamburg (Germany) – MOUZ sets new standard In the heart of the German metropolis: 1,400 square meters for promoting young talents, team development and esports events. Germany's most successful esports organization MOUZ will open Europe's most modern esports performance and event center in early summer 2024. With 1,400 square meters spread over three floors, the new MOUZ headquarters sets a benchmark in professional gaming. Strategically located in the center of Hamburg (Germany), the state-of-the-art facility offers the ideal conditions for team development and the support of young talents. MOUZ NXT, the organization’s junior Counter-Strike team, is already a prime example of talent development. The new headquarters will now create even more professional structures to further strengthen MOUZ position as one of the world’s leading esports organizations. The location not far from Hamburg's main railway station was chosen deliberately, explains Stefan Wendt, CEO of MOUZ: "The excellent connections to the train station and airport and the location in the heart of Hamburg were basic requirements for us when choosing the location.
