📣 Stemette Society Speaks: Perspectives on barriers to STEAM 📣 Last week we asked our Stemette Society 'What would you say has been your biggest challenge you've faced as a girl/non-binary individual interested in STEAM?' Here's what they had to say... 👉 Feeling Intimidated or Unwelcome in Male-Dominated Spaces - 50% For half of our respondents, the struggle with feeling out of place in traditionally male-dominated environments emerged as a significant challenge. Addressing this issue is pivotal in fostering inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued and empowered to thrive. 👉 Lack of Representation and Role Models - 33% A third of our community pointed to the lack of visible role models and representation in STEAM fields as a barrier. We recognise the importance of representation in inspiring future generations and are committed to amplifying diverse voices and stories. 👉 Stereotypes and Gender Bias - 11% Navigating through stereotypes and gender bias posed a challenge for 11% of our respondents. Overcoming these societal barriers requires collective effort to challenge stereotypes and foster environments that celebrate individual talents and aspirations. 👉 Limited Access to Resources and Opportunities - 5% For 5% of our community, limited access to resources and opportunities presented obstacles on their STEAM journey. Bridging this gap is essential in ensuring equitable access to education, mentorship, and opportunities for all aspiring STEAM enthusiasts. Proof that you can't be what you can't see... At the start of this EmpowerCyber day, an audience of 500 teenaged girls were asked "how many of your would consider a future in STEM?" 8 people put their hands up. After experimenting with robots, coding, VR, logic puzzles, safecracking, escape rooms and loads more, I then asked them the same question. At least 100 hands flew in the air. ✋ The brilliant minds of these Year 8 students were opened up to new worlds, new possibilities by people who are passionate about their work and inspiring our region's children and future workforce. ⚡ The incredible Newcastle United Foundation team partnered with the one and only Sage to spark the STEM dreams in ONE THOUSAND 12/13 year-old girls from schools across the North East, over two days. WOW! I was invited to wrap up the event by the incredible Newcastle United Foundation so I could talk about the REAL-LIFE women I know working in #STEM industries. Stories of people doing life-changing work alongside their own families, friends and passions. Women who were once girls just like them. I told them about some of the wonderful women of Newcastle Helix like Marie Labus, Jo Larby, Penny Lovat, Ashmita Randhawa, DPhil, Jennine Jonczyk, Lynne Corner, Somin TONG and people like Vijayalakshmi Subramani, Ruth Dixon, Hannah Underwood, Nicola Mahmood, Alexandra Knight and Dani W.. All brilliant in their own fields and beyond. 💡 Stories really can make a difference... #industry #education #inspiration #partnerships #talentpipelines #northeast Amazing work from the NUF team Steve Beharall Dawn Barber Caroline Brown Andrew Foster and the passionate Sage teams Ben Aung, as well as the facilitators. Educators - please see the comments for all the local organisations who are genuinely interested and invested in bridging this gap between education and industry - it's wonderful to see!
