South Africa is constantly growing and evolving - a key topic at today's South Africa Global Reputation Study event. Gonzalo Vilar, one of the experts on the panel, spoke to how South Africa's global reputation has undergone a remarkable transformation - from being recognised for its political background, to a nation celebrated for our achievements, remarkable people, sports culture and stunning destinations. Today, South Africa is widely considered one of the top leisure and business destinations in the world, offering a wealth of natural splendour, adventure, tourism sites, and culture to explore and enjoy. May we continue to grow and evolve, as we invite the world to #VisitSouthAfrica! #SAGlobalReputation

A good 40 years summary. (I recall industry celebrations in the early 1980s when Australia achieved one million international arrivals for the first time). 'In the 1980s, international tourism increased markedly – people were starting to travel to Australia in large numbers, for leisure purposes. It was driven by the sudden availability of relatively cheap flights. That, in turn, was due to the passing of the 1970s oil shocks, the introduction of large‐capacity aircraft (like the Boeing 747) on routes to Australia, and the floating and subsequent depreciation of the A$. This influx of demand resulted in somewhat haphazard development, speculation and a boom‐bust volatility in tourism‐related investments. Some investors in tourism developments were burned, and some tourists had poor experiences. Tourism statistics and forecasts were fairly limited. There were some volume‐based metrics ... The lack of good data probably fed into the low‐yield high‐volume approach to tourism in the 1980s - such as cheap package tours' (Extract from: Productivity Commission research paper: Australia’s international tourism industry Submission by Tourism Australia 28 November 2014)

Bridging Cultures: Your Quick Guide to South Africa 🇿🇦 Travel isn't just about destinations; it’s about connecting with cultures. At Timeless Africa Safaris, we believe in respecting local customs for a richer travel experience. South Africa is probably the most familiar country to the Western world, thanks to their relatively recent history, which saw apartheid overturned and the new South Africa led by the revered President Nelson Mandela. Visitors to this region shouldn’t be intimidated by the country’s 11 official languages, as business in the major areas and tourist hubs is predominantly done in English. Here are some tips to help you to orient yourself culturally in South Africa. • Know Your History: Explore Nelson Mandela’s legacy and respect historical sites like Robben Island. • Warm Greetings: Handshakes with eye contact are customary. In rural areas, use both hands and respect elders with titles like Tata or Mama. • Tipping: Leave 10% at restaurants and small tips (R10-R20) for minor services. • African Time: Relax and understand “now-now” and “just now” aren’t immediate. • Enjoy a Braai: Join in the social BBQ tradition. Bring wine or a small gift to show thanks. 🔥 • Straightforward Talk: Loud conversations are normal; don’t mistake them for anger. • Respect Elders: Use titles like Oom (Uncle) or Tannie (Aunt) with Afrikaans speakers. 🇿🇦 Learn Slang: “Shame!” shows empathy, “Is it?” means "Really?", and “Lekker” means something good. And remember a “robot” is a traffic light Plan your South African trip with us today 📨: info@tasafaris.com 🖱: www.tasafaris.com 📸 : van Embden family 📍 : Gondwana Game Reserve 🌍: South Africa #TimelessAfricaSafaris #SouthAfrica #TravelTips #CulturalRespect #SouthAfricaCulture

Fantastic animation from the ABS showing the economies from which short term visitors to our shores come. Interesting to see the change over 40 years including the impact of changes in Japan’s economy, the growth of #SoutheastAsia and #India and the consistency of #NewZealand. Diversification of markets helps build resilience and opportunity with the Australian Government’s work on expanding trade, markets and relationships in our neighbouring regions. Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) has been pleased to be part of this work through the Invested 2040 Strategy: https://lnkd.in/gJU8GQ36 The National Visitor Economy Strategy THRIVE 2030 has #Diversification as a key theme along with #Modernisation to support #Tourism operators in meeting travellers’ needs: https://lnkd.in/gduA5_9T If you’d like to see more #Traveller data check out Austrade’s Tourism Research Australia dashboard and PDF called Visitor Economy Facts and Figures: https://lnkd.in/gicMdTJk 🙏 to everyone working to support the #VisitorEconomy in Australia which was worth $213 billion in 2023-2024 (when long stay international students are included).

Interesting view of inbound tourists to Australia! Singapore and Indonesia made the top 10 in the 2023-2024 period. Did you know Southeast Asia is projected to have 181 million outbound travelers by 2040, quadrupling 2022 levels? The Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040 suggests we have a huge opportunity to expand tourism from this fast-growing region right on our doorstep. One of the report's key recommendations is enhancing tourism promotion and building industry capability to warmly welcome Southeast Asian visitors. By acting now, we can secure a larger share of this booming market. The economic and people-to-people benefits will be immense as we strengthen bonds with our closest neighbors!
