Endemic Mycoses Blastomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, and histoplasmosis are the endemic mycoses that are most prevalent in North America. Exposure within the focal endemic regions is unavoidable. These fungi have traditionally had distinct geographic distributions, although these regions are expanding. 1-Many patients present with CAP and are not responding to antibiotics. CAP may need to be reevaluated; it should not be a 'catchall' and an infiltrate on a chest X-ray may have other differentials especially in the abscence of fever or leukocytosis. 2- In Endemic regions for mycoses, these are quite common - (In the Central Valley of California, 20% of CAP may be from coccidioidomycosis. 3- In HIV, Histoplasmosis is disseminated and presents as a pancytopenia with a septic picture. 4- In EastTexas, Histoplasmosis imay cause 8% of CAP. 5- Regions of endemic mycoses may need to be updated as people and distribution change. 6-Veterinary patients may assist in defining geographic spread by serving as “sentinels” indicating disease expansion.

Melissa Bell, President of the Florida Lyme Disease Association and member of Project Lyme's Executive Board, led a Zoom meeting with Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo to speak about Lyme disease in Florida. Members of the Department of Health as well as Professor Kerry Clark from the University of North Florida also participated in the important discussion. Key takeaways include that Lyme disease is often undercounted in the state and misrepresented as rare. This can lead to people failing to take adequate precautions to prevent a tick bite, delayed diagnoses, and inadequate treatment for those who get infected. Increased education and awareness among doctors and the public are necessary to address this issue effectively. To learn more, check out this follow-up email that Melissa sent following the meeting, which is full of helpful facts and scientific evidence, now available on our website: https://lnkd.in/e8e5UzcT Image: Parasite Prevalence Maps From the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) #projectlyme #lyme #tickbornediseases #lymediseaseawareness #coinfections #chronicillness #chronicpain #neurological #brain #lymewarrior #health #mentalhealth #medicine #health #science #research #advocacy #funding

New article from my Lab: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is on the rise worldwide, ranking as the third leading cause of atherosclerosis-related morbidity; much less is known about its trends in hospitalizations among methamphetamine and cocaine users. We evaluated the overall trend in the prevalence of hospital admission for PAD with or without the use of stimulant abuse (methamphetamine and cocaine) across the United States. Additionally, we evaluated the PAD-related hospitalizations trend stratified by age, race, sex, and geographic location. #Methamphetamine #Cocaine #HospitalAdmission #PeripheralArteryDisease #PAD
