“𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝑴𝒊𝒄𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒊𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 𝑻𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝑴𝒚 𝑳𝒆𝒏𝒔, 𝑴𝒚 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝑱𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒚 𝑨𝒕 𝑺𝒀𝑵𝑳𝑨𝑩 𝑮𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒂’’ Hello Cherished Audience, KARIMA ISSIFU — a final-year student in the Department of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology —shares with us her experience as an intern at SYNLAB Ghana. Microbiology touches every corner of life—from food production, medicine, and cosmetics, to biodegradation, water purification, and genetic engineering. New microorganisms are constantly being discovered and studied, driving innovation in ways that make life easier. During my recent internship at SYNLAB Ghana, formerly known as Medlab, I had the privilege of immersing myself in the dynamic field of microbiology laboratory practices. With a solid foundation in chemistry, biology, and biochemistry, my main goal was to gain practical experience in a medical laboratory setting, focusing on microbiological operations. At SYNLAB Ghana, I performed various microbiological procedures, including sample preparation, culture techniques, gram staining, and microscopic analysis. These hands-on experiences deepened my understanding of microbial diagnostics and their impact on patient care. As I repeatedly performed these tasks, I developed two critical skills that will stay with me throughout my career—how to properly culture a plate and how to accurately read test results. These foundational skills, though seemingly simple, are at the heart of effective diagnostics and patient treatment. One experience I’ll never forget occurred when I was tasked to dye a stool sample (Gram Staining) - definitely a surprising experience! This internship strengthened my passion for microbiology, revealing the beauty of science and its impact on everyday life. Biochemistry truly is a captivating field, and I’m excited to take this knowledge forward into the future. Thank you, Karima!!!! Thank you, SYNLAB-Ghana!!! Follow us for more!! 𝑮𝑯𝑨𝑩𝑺𝑨! How did I get into the core Clinical Research team? 📚 Self Interest I was unaware of the clinical research domain and its scope until I started my internship as part of my PharmD curriculum. I was posted in the pediatric neurology department for two months during my college internship period . During this time, a pediatric neurologist assigned me to check the ADR of a patient who had some allergic reaction to antiepileptic drugs. This patient was later consented for a clinical trial, triggered my interest in the field. 📚Internship in Clinical Research Department With my interest now focused on clinical research, I completed a one-month internship as a Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) in the clinical research department during the final period of my academic internship. This experience helped me understand the basic structure and working patterns of the domain. 📚Connections and Network Fortunately, there was a vacancy for a Clinical Trial Assistant (CTA) role at the time I graduated. A friend working at my current company referred me, which played a crucial role in my job hunt. Never underestimate the power of your network. 📚Online Assessment Connections can get you an interview call, but they don't guarantee a job. The next critical step was clearing the online assessment. Many take this step lightly, but even a small mistake or poor time management can lead to disqualification. Seek guidance from those who have passed the assessment for that particular company to understand the model of the assessment. 📚HR Round This round involved discussing my educational background and academic details. It's more of a communication skills check. 📚Face-to-Face Interview This main interview round with the panel, including managers and directors, focused on my knowledge and interest in clinical research. My one-month internship as a CRC significantly helped in answering the questions. Questions were also asked about my Pharm D projects and clinical internship activities 📚Final HR Round This round covered salary, joining date, company expectations, and other perks. 👔 Finally, an offer letter was received and accepted Key Takeaways: 1- Upskill yourself during your academics and have a professional CV ready. 2-Grow your network and connections. Dear LinkedIn Network, We are the British Pharmaceutical Students' Association (BPSA), representing over 13,000 pharmacy undergraduates and trainees across Great Britain. For the last 82 years the Association has been led by a dedicated executive team of 20 individuals ranging from 1st year undergraduates to 1st-year qualified pharmacists. However, shaping the future of pharmacy requires more than this. We rely on sub-committees, BPSA representatives, liaisons, and most importantly, our sponsors and stakeholders. We are firm believers in actions speaking louder than words. 'We care about the development of students'➡‘We will deliver an interactive workshop on ABC tailored to students’ ‘We are interested in bringing in more early talent’➡’We will develop more summer internships and placements for students to gain skills in XYZ’ ‘We care about student feedback’➡’We will host a focus group to understand the strengths and weaknesses of our programme’ For the BPSA, our words are ‘represent, educate, and entertain pharmacy students and trainee pharmacists’ and these are our most recent actions: - Commitment to at least one weekly meeting involving work on our first campaign, South Asian Heritage Month - Hosted a webinar with Rowlands Pharmacy on "What to expect in your foundation training year." - Began the planning for our 1st-year roadshows for new pharmacy students. - Planned attendance to foundation trainee induction events to promote free BPSA graduate membership. - Further planning for our Annual Conference and BPSA Day in Swansea University - Launched project ‘Vision Unlimited’ entailing a new loyalty scheme - BPSA tiers, and enhanced sponsorship packages. This is just a fraction of the enthusiasm and motivation found in 20 of the 13,000+ budding future pharmacists. Whether you’re interested in collaborating with us on activities, or attending our flagship Annual Conference to meet our students for yourself - if your interest lies in what students care about and what we are advocating for, then the role of one of our sponsors just might be the perfect fit for you! ‘The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of dreams’ Are you ready to empower the dreamers of today to become the innovators of tomorrow? Contact our External Relations Officer: Sue Wong, via LinkedIn or email ero@bpsa.co.uk and be prepared to answer the following questions: - Who are you? - What are your visions and values? - Why do you want to sponsor us? - Where do you see our collaboration? - When are you available for a meeting? Kind regards, The BPSA💙

NAVIGATING CHALLENGES DURING MY NYSC IN BRASS AS A MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST During my NYSC in Brass, I was stationed as a medical laboratory scientist. This experience was both challenging and eye-opening, as I was often left without supervision and had to work with minimal standard equipment. In my internship days at the Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, we interns were repeatedly told about what the reality would look like, I didn't quite grasp until I was in Brass. INITIAL REALITY vs EXPECTATIONS: When I first arrived at Brass, I had certain expectations about the resources and support I would receive. However, the reality was starkly different. The laboratory was under-equipped, and I had to rely heavily on my training and resourcefulness. Working with limited equipment was one of the biggest challenges. Many standard tests and procedures required improvisation. For instance, I had to find alternative methods to conduct basic diagnostic tests, often using outdated or makeshift tools. The absence of supervision meant that I had to make critical decisions independently. This was daunting at first, but it also pushed me to develop a deeper understanding of my field and trust my judgment. I learned to be meticulous and double-check my work to ensure accuracy. Despite these challenges, this experience significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth. I became more resilient, adaptable, and confident in my abilities. It also reinforced the importance of continuous learning and staying updated with the latest advancements in medical science. Despite the limitations, I was able to make a positive impact on the community. Providing essential healthcare services, even with limited resources, was incredibly rewarding. It underscored the importance of healthcare accessibility and the need for better infrastructure in rural areas. My NYSC experience in Brass was a testament to the resilience and adaptability required in the healthcare field. It highlighted the gaps in our healthcare system and the urgent need for improvements. This experience has fueled my passion for contributing to the development of better healthcare services in Nigeria. I will share more of my experience. stay tuned... #nyscdiaries #mls #medicallaboratoryscientist #gritandgrowtymindset
