TODAY: The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions (HELP) is hearing from community members impacted by private equity and corporate greed at Steward Health Care. This is a critical moment for policymakers to take action to prevent the abuses of private equity in our health care system. Congress Must Provide Supplemental Funding to VA On July 15, 2024, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) officials informed Congress that the department requires an additional $3 billion in funding to support veterans’ pensions and benefits for the remaining months of the current fiscal year. The FRA signed a letter with several other organizations to key legislators urging Congress to immediately provide additional funding to the VA for this fiscal year. Unless Congress approves this necessary funding by September 20, roughly seven million veterans and their beneficiaries may not receive VA disability compensation and other benefits. Although the FRA supports efforts to ensure accountability for the use of VA funds, these shortfalls are not the fault of our veterans and their families, who have given so much to our country. They should not be asked to bear further burdens, such as delayed benefits and inadequate medical care, due to funding challenges. We urge members to use the Action Center to ask Congress to act swiftly to approve the necessary funding so that there is no gap in either benefits or needed health care. It seems clear that the Government doesn't regard GPs as part of the Public Sector for the purposes of protecting them against the rise in employers NI but is this correct? can an organization be both an independent contractor and part of the Public Sector? Yes GPs and their staff are not NHS employees but 1. Many GP practices have opted for NHS Body Status which confers them recognition as such under legislation. And represents the surrender of some of the rights of the Private Sector 2. Many GPs and their staff are eligible for and receive NHS Pensions. 3. the price and terms of service are set Nationally by the Department of Health ( and locally by ICBs) with limited scope for the generation of non-contractual ' private' income. 4. GMS and PMS contracts are in perpetuity ( unless breached or terminated) which is a pretty unique status rarely encountered in the Private sector my view is that GP Practices are both independent contractors and part of the public sector (NHS) and from a strategic perspective of developing an integrated health service that benefits patients it is not helpful to regard them otherwise, regardless of any decisions around funding support for employers NI. of course you may have a different opinion!

Earlier this month, we explored the importance of creating an LPA with professional guidance. After hearing your questions, we’re taking a closer look at the two types of LPA you should consider: 👉 Property and Financial Affairs LPA: This allows your attorney to manage decisions such as handling your finances, managing your bank accounts, collecting benefits or pensions, paying bills, and even selling your home. 👉 Health and Welfare LPA: With this LPA, your attorney can make decisions regarding your daily routine, medical care, moving into a care home, and life-sustaining treatment if you do not have the mental capacity to make such decisions yourself. #LPA #lastingpowerofattorney #legaladvice

The Government has just released the Final Aged Care Taskforce Report which makes a number of recommendations regarding changes to aged care funding. While the Government has confirmed they won't change the assessment of the family home, the report proposes an increase to care receiver contributions to the cost of their care, linking fees to Age Pension status, abolishing RADs, and reintroducing retention amounts. The MLC TechConnect team have summarised all you need to know about the recommendations. https://lnkd.in/grcsiVqc #agedcare #financialadvice #retirementplanning #mlc

MOVING? WA’S LONG-TERM CARE BENEFITS GO WITH YOU AARP of Washington’s Marguerite Ro and Dr. Charles Mayer laid out how Washingtonians can now take our benefits with us if we move out of state for work, family, or retirement in the Washington State Standard. “This will have a big impact on anyone who lives and works in Washington state. Now, we’ll be able to keep our long-term care benefits, even if we leave the state for work, family, or retirement. Further paving the way for portability, 15 states are considering similar long-term care programs in response to the growing need.” They go on to say “Don’t be fooled by misleading messages from those who intentionally crafted Initiative 2124 to sound like a reasonable change to make the program voluntary. According to experts and actuarial analysis, the true impact of the initiative would be to kill the program, taking benefits away from more than 3 million workers.” https://lnkd.in/gz97vsx6
