What goes on behind the research in Landscape Architecture? Check out my video. This is a glimpse of my dedication to pursue a goal. And yes, if you blink, you might miss how fast I work! 😉 I am doing PhD in plants for Rain Gardens. For instance, one of my experiments involved 900 pots, and I measured them all. My results required thousands of measurements and hours/days/weeks spent in the greenhouse and the lab. IstanbulSMD is organizing the first leg of the international conference series titled "What Does Architecture Do?" in order to emphasize the role, perception and sphere of influence of the architectural profession in the society within the challenging conditions in our country and our surrounding geography. While focusing on the healing role of architecture in our geography where wars and earthquakes are intensely experienced, it also plans to evaluate the needs of humanity in this period in the context of architecture, using the "hierarchy of needs" theory of American psychologist Abraham Maslow. The University of South Australia's Vernacular Knowldge Group [VKRG] and The University of Adelaide's Centre for Asian and Middle Eastern Architecture [CAMEA] invite you to attend our International Conference to be held in Adelaide, Australia. A synopsis: 'Mapping Vernacular Terrains' is a call for reflection on the scope, diversity, interconnectedness, and at the same time, diasporic nature of vernacular studies in 2024. It is an opportunity to consider cartographers as research tools that produce conceptual mappings to navigate complex 'terrains' of the contentious and often ambiguous notion of what might be defined as the 'vernacular'. Viewing the vernacular through a cartographic agency, it is proposed as a strategy to decipher the relational and global nature of the vernacular.

The Power of Lo-TEK: A Design Movement to Rebuild Understanding of Indigenous Philosophy and Vernacular Architecture

[HKIA Journal | Issue 79: Community] Participant Observation and Community Design : An Anthropological Inquiry of the Western District Public Cargo Working Area Benni Yu-Ling Pong The Western District Public Cargo Working Area, alias Sai Wan Pier or Instagram Pier, sits on reclaimed land planned for cargo handling functions. It was never designed as an open space. It was only “discovered” by the public at large when it received the Outstanding Public Space Award in 2013. Despite accessing the area for purposes other than logistic functions being technically unauthorized, the space, with its spectacular waterfront view, it received widespread media coverage and attracted regular crowds of visitors. Public appropriation and the vibrant activities at the pier defied the practice and pedagogy of design and planning. It is also debatable whether the categorization of formal versus informal space and top-down versus bottom-up approach could have suitably described its presence. Conventional design and planning apparatuses focusing on tangible, well defined, quantitative and geometric elements fail to frame these undesigned activities and the perception of space. This paper analyzes three major aspects which may shed light to future community design, namely spatial practice, perception of space and tacit agreement.
