We are thrilled to partner with All Tech Is Human to organize a hackathon around our recently launched algorithmic bias bounty program, the first of ten. With the support of Google.org, we are building themed programs that aim to foster community and professionalize the practice of algorithmic assessment. To kick off the event, Dr. Rumman Chowdhury will moderate a panel on AI governance, crowdsourcing, and community-based responses, with an incredible line-up of speakers: Charvi Rastogi, Chloe Myshel Burke, Dr. Sasha Luccioni, and Swapneel Mehta. We invite participants of all skill levels to enter, and prizes are provided to winning submissions at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time discussing AI in different ecosystems with our students. In Latin America and Spain, there's a sense that this might just be a bubble about to burst. 🎈 In Silicon Valley, we are thrilled and continually surprised by the innovative case studies and projects that hackers are developing. 🚀 There seems to be a different resonance depending on your location. Why do you think this is happening? Are the geographical echo chambers of social media creating a clear divide? 🌍

🌐✨ Exciting news! The MIT Policy Hackathon is a remarkable event that unites bright minds from around the globe to utilize the power of AI in tackling real-world challenges. 🖥️🔬 This year's virtual edition explored housing inequality, and the impact was truly groundbreaking. 🏘️ MIT students Eric Liu and Ashley Peake from the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society participated in the hackathon, delving into the pressing issue of housing inequality. Along with other passionate participants, they formed "Team Ctrl+Alt+Defeat" and developed an innovative solution for the eviction crisis. In just one hour, their comprehensive project was drafted, and they even built a dashboard to showcase their solution by 1 a.m. 🌍 But housing wasn't the only challenge addressed at the hackathon! Diverse problem areas, including human rights, health, and aerospace, sparked fresh perspectives and creative solutions. Participants like Yassine Elhallaoui explored open-source aerospace data to propose solutions for environmental justice. Hi all, Happy Friday! Very interesting week for me, thought I'd share some thoughts. At Data Literacy, we're in the middle of the build up to a brand new course launch, BUT... I decided to take a couple half days and attend a few of the #SeattleTechWeek events around town – one at Amazon Web Services (AWS), an event kick-off party, and a #Startup425 session on the "Eastside" of Seattle (Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, etc.) Was it worth it? Yes, I think so. I met a lot of interesting people in the tech world, from execs at massive companies, company founders, investors, even some students, and folks in city government in my home town, including the mayor. What came of it all, and will I do it again? As of right now, my take away is that there's a lot of activity and a WHOLE lot of talent in tech in Seattle and the Eastside, but investing in tech here has cooled off a little. Of course there's a ton of buzz and hype around generative AI right now - almost a frenzy, really. People calling it a "gold rush," etc. My personal take is that while generative AI will actually change the game in a lot of industries, the hype will fade and/or fizzle over time, as some of that excitement isn't grounded in an appreciation for the drawbacks or challenges of the technology itself. I was very encouraged to hear Swami Sivasubramanian talk about the importance of #AILiteracy in his panel discussion with S. Somasegar. I couldn't agree more with him (and yes, I gave him a copy of my book!). All in all, I'm glad I took the time to network and connect. I've been working so hard writing and creating courses and training, that I haven't made much time to just go out there and meet new people in the space in general. It made me think it might be interesting for our company to host a session in next year's tech week about data and AI literacy. We'll see if we have the bandwidth to pull that off... I'm curious how you prioritize networking, what works well for you, and how you try to find the time? Lastly, huge thanks to Matt McIlwain and Mark T. Nelson at Madrona for starting this event (last year, I believe), and for all the speakers and panel presenters. It was nice to be back in the audience, listening and taking notes.

🤖 August is a month for technical innovation 🤖 Challenges are often opportunities in disguise. Digital i's engineering and data science teams converted the challenge of lower staffing levels in August into an opportunity for innovation and cross-collaboration. Over the past two weeks, we've hosted the company's first #hackathon in conjunction with technical industry leaders across a range of industries as well as working with several #AI experts to understand the possibilities, risks and implications of more widespread use of #generativeAI in the development space. However, this isn't the first time we've worked with leading experts in the technical world... 3 years ago we partnered with Imperial College London and their Data Sparks programme to understand how our global harmonised viewing data set could drive success for commissioners and rights holders across the industry.
