The #SouthAfrican government has appointed 3 of the country's leading think-tanks to coordinate the Think 20 (#T20) South Africa, an official engagement group of the #G20, during its presidency from December 2024 to November 2025. The Institute for Global Dialogue associated with University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika led by Philani Mthembu, the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) led by Elizabeth Sidiropoulos and the University of Johannesburg Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATC) led by Siphamandla "Si" Zondi will jointly spearhead this crucial initiative. The #T20 serves as a platform for research institutions and experts to provide evidence-based policy recommendations to the #G20. The South African #T20 organisers will facilitate discussions and consolidate inputs from all members into actionable proposals for consideration by G20 leaders. South Africa's G20 presidency will focus on the theme of ‘Solidarity, Inclusion and Sustainability’, with key priorities including: hunger and poverty; debt and development; inclusion; just transition; sustainable financing for development; reform of the international financial architecture; strengthening the WTO; digital transformation; and governance of critical minerals. African Union at the G20, Now What? It has been one year since the African Union joined the G20 on September 9, 2023. In light of this milestone, I have shared an article outlining the significance of this membership for Africa and how the continent can leverage this opportunity to advance its development agenda. Later, in February 2024, the African Union Assembly finalized the modalities for the AU's participation within the Group. As South Africa gears up to take the reins of the G20, African countries must seize this opportunity to drive forward the continental development agenda and advocate for a more just and equitable world. South Africa should leverage its position within the G20 to advocate for fairer global governance and combat economic inequality. South Africa will take the helm of the G20 for the year 2025, a notable moment for the African continent and the Global South. This presidency is especially significant following the African Union's recent admission as a permanent member of the G20 during India’s G20 Presidency in New Delhi. India had infused the G20 with new purpose and relevance. By organizing the Voice of the Global South Summit, both before and at the end of its presidency, India decisively shifted the G20 agenda from the concerns of developed countries to those of developing ones. This shift was clearly reflected in the New Delhi G20 Declaration. South Africa's G20 presidency is a chance to ensure that the needs and perspectives of the Global South are at the forefront of global discussions. President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasized the importance of international solidarity and the fight against hunger, climate change, and the governance of artificial intelligence. Before South Africa passes the G20 baton to the USA, it will be crucial to amplify South-South Cooperation. By working together, countries of the Global South can leverage their collective strengths to address shared challenges. South Africa's presidency will promote inclusive dialogues between governments, civil society, and corporations, continuing the innovative practices initiated by Brazil. It is essential for South Africa to consolidate the positions of the Global South and hand over to the US a solid legacy on these issues, ensuring that the agenda of the Global South is not diluted or undermined. The G20 presidency offers South Africa a chance to advocate for more effective reforms. Progress on issues such as sovereign debt, the IMF's Common Framework, and improving the World Trade Organization's dispute settlement mechanism which would further help the objective of inclusive growth. It is A New Dawn for Africa! #G20 #SouthAfrica #GlobalSouth #IndoAfricanRelations #SouthSouthCooperation #SustainableDevelopment

𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝟮𝟬. The African Union was admitted as a permanent member of the G20 in September 2023. The inclusion is set to be formally recognized at the upcoming G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024. It grants Africa's 55 member states a platform to participate in shaping international economic policies. For the first time, the continent will have direct representation in this influential forum, allowing it to advocate for its unique interests and challenges on the global stage. This development is particularly crucial given Africa's growing economic importance, its vast natural resources, and its young, dynamic population. The African Union's presence in the G20 is expected to bring fresh perspectives to discussions on issues such as sustainable development, climate change mitigation, and equitable global trade practices. Notably, Ceyla Pazarbasioglu shared with reporters in a Washington brief about a comprehensive strategy to alleviate debt burdens for economically challenged nations, with a particular focus on African countries. This multifaceted approach encompasses three key elements: 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗻𝘀, 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝘁 𝘀𝘄𝗮𝗽𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝘀. The primary objective is to reduce the financial strain on debtor nations, enabling them to reallocate resources towards critical public services and sustainable development initiatives. #Africa

1moIn Brazil they say BRAVO. I believe the four pillars could move on piece meals, i.e. Trade & I, E&Empl, etc. why? Because resources are always scarce limited in supply, yet implementation of all the four pillars encourage and always also, attached by risks and uncertainties, bearing in mind the current world economic and social, as well as political situations. Ukrainian war, adding fuel to the fire, North Korea joining the war... Never in the history of mankind when war was at its best, and the economy as well as it's best, war was made to make noise everywhere, attracts hyperinflations and very low purchasing powers. To mention but a few. I expect Sir we will talk more on this when you are done specifically as follows: a) Encouraging Sector Linkages to boost Trade and Investment. Earmarking business hubs with a priority of the G20 Trade partners, Africa countries are not exception. I am thinking bof the East African Countries (and EAC at large) b) Creating a Policy and Governance Climate in the G20 Trade Partners, so that, they perform well the function of trade facilitation, in particular the seaborne trade. c) The four pillars above can be made in motion by effective Region Economic Arrangements. Are we ready?
