This is great stuff cementing Argonne’s legacy. Most wonder about the name Argonne. Some say it’s directly related to the name of a World War I and II forest battlefield called the Argonne forest. Folks at the first National Lab are more clever than that. Their charge is to see the forest through the trees and as such many world leading discoveries happen there. The name also relates to argon gas, that abundant gas that reacts to next to nothing and as such is a key element in many industrial processes. The point is the Argonne lab is rock solid unyielding to distractions that might knock if off course. As humor is well steeped in creativity, Argonne lore has the name closely tied to pirates. The name parses to “arrr gone.” Arrr is yes or a show of excitement in pirate language. You might ask why the lab wants to get rid of the word yes and the sense of excitement. Elementary my dear Watson. The lab does not go along to get along. The word yes is rendered only when it suits Argonne’s core foundation of knowledge and discovery. The lab is not prone to premature excitement. Some might call the staff stoic. Their gratification comes from stoking excitement in physics outside their hallowed walls.

We from Fraunhofer LBF are attending the NAWEA, North American Wind Energy Academy WIND TECH Conference in New Brunswick, USA, to present results enabling the design of safe and relaible wind energy turbines. During the speech with the title „Influence of production quality on the fatigue life of wind energy components“ we talk about #reliability, #fatigue and #design of welded and cast wind energy components.

This approach might be one way to ensure WTG OEMs take more responsibility and ownership of the whole system design for floating wind farms which should help avoid warranty gaps (effective remediation of defects in a new territory aside). Can it genuinely be said that European WTG OEMs are backing themselves like this on commercial floating projects? Not so sure…
