Anglo-Australian battery maker, Gelion has signed a joint development agreement with California-based #batterytechnology company, Ionblox to develop next-generation lithium silicon sulfur (LiSiS) cells targeting the electric vertical take-off and landing (#eVTOL) and the global #EV market. As part of the JDA, Gelion will focus on the optimization of the sulfur cathode by incorporating the IP portfolio. At the same time, Ionblox will provide its high-energy density pre-lithiated silicon oxide anode and optimize it for use with Gelion's sulfur cathode. As a battery material enthusiast, this news fills me with joy, and I'd like to add a few points gathered during my research on Sri Lankan Vein Quartz (SLVQ), one of the purest forms of vein quartz available in the world. Raw SLVQ has a SiO2 purity of over 95%. In response to the pressing need for high energy density lithium ion batteries, I have focused on developing quartz-based anodes which can accommodate more lithium ions, resulting in increased energy density and improved overall battery performance. However, the transition from raw SLVQ to functional anode material is not without difficulties. The initial difficulty lies in transforming quartz lumps into finely ground particles through grinding and pulverization, a process made particularly laborious due to quartz's exceptional hardness. This is followed by a few chemical and physical treatments that are crucial to forming SiOx with increased conductivity. Moreover, to optimize adhesive properties and facilitate solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, novel binders and electrolyte components are essential. Addressing the issue of volume expansion during lithium intercalation is very important since it can compromise SEI integrity, resulting in battery failure. Overcoming these fundamental challenges is essential for the development of stable SiOx-based anodes. Congratulations to Novacium on their outstanding performance in this endeavor, which definitely represents a key milestone in the evolution of battery technology. Finally, I would like to briefly touch upon the Sri Lankan situation. Sri Lanka consistently exports SLVQ in chip and lump forms, reflecting the same situation as Sri Lankan vein graphite. Enhancing SLVQ for LIB applications poses challenges but promises significant rewards. Embracing this challenge cultivates a culture of value addition. Envisioning a future where Sri Lanka aligns its economic strategies with global trends is essential. This endeavor is more than just about SLVQ. It is about resilience, intelligence, and adaptability. Let's seize opportunities like this to propel Sri Lanka's development instead of merely exporting resources.

A 55% increase to #LithiumBattery anode energy capacity has marked a major milestone for Altech Batteries Limited (ASX:ATC), as the company continues to develop its Silumina Anodes™ battery material technology. In this article, the approach exploits the high ionic conductivity of ionic liquids and a backbone of a solid polymer generating yet another way to address the safety concerns posed by liquid electrolytes in conventional lithium ion batteries while yielding a better performance overall. Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in various applications but need improved binders to enhance their performance to meet evolving demands. This is because silicon oxide (SiO), a promising anode material due to its high capacity and low cost, faces several challenges. These include poor conductivity, which leads to slower charging rates, and significant expansion during charging. How to build a lithium-ion electrode factory in 9 months? My friend Duke Oh knows the answer. His 500MWh electrode factory in Eumseong, Korea came online this February, starting only in May 2023. Making electrodes is the trickiest part of battery cell manufacturing. Having a turn-key solution provider for your gigafactory is no guarantee that you’ll be able to make electrodes on day one. What is guaranteed, is that you will have problems making electrodes on your new electrode line. And your turn-key solution provider will not help you - the machines work, what’s the problem? If that sounds familiar, then it is better to get some people who know how to run an electrode line.
