Fair Wear at Cascale (formerly SAC) panel in London! Cascale, formerly the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), celebrated its rebrand at an event in London this week. Cascale was founded as a global nonprofit alliance with the goal of scaling collective action throughout the consumer goods industry. “Due diligence is an individual obligation, but one that brands can only comply with through collective action. Case in point: sourcing comprehensive, reliable, stakeholder-validated information on supply chain risks. That's why Cascale and Fair Wear have teamed up to provide Cascale members with due diligence guidance and information,” said Fair Wear’s Executive Director Alexander Kohnstamm at the panel. Industry alignment is a key ingredient for bringing about collective action. That's why Fair Wear collaborates with other valued MSIs, such as Cascale, to align efforts, share knowledge and demonstrate how impactful #HRDD implementation can help factory workers have their #humanrights realised. What a summer it’s been! As we close this chapter, I want to deeply thank everyone who’s been part of BelloX.swe’s journey. To those who supported, collaborated, and believed in us—you’ve helped shape this dream into reality. This summer wasn’t just about launching fashion; it was about creating meaning, celebrating freedom, and standing for something bigger. BelloX.swe started from a very personal place. Growing up, I saw my mother and sisters struggle under restrictions that denied them the simple freedom to wear what they wanted. You may have noticed that my profile got a little boost in the form of a new headshot! Now, this isn't your average photo update; I was able to get a new headshot from celebrity photographer Kevin Tachman as part of Rent The Runway's IRL customer activation in New York City last week. Why is my new headshot important? I have always admired brands who celebrate that their customers are human, meaning they are unique and bound to change. While I believe that many brands in today's marketplace place emphasis on consumer uniqueness via curated targeting and on-site personalization, I would argue that not enough prioritize the very real fact that customers are bound to change based on what they're going through. That means the stories (marketing) features (digital) and products (physical) themselves should be built flexibly and constantly innovated upon. Jennifer Hyman and team are a great example of just that! They took a 360 approach to building an IRL activation that WORKED. Rent The Runway understands that real-world experiences can be used strategically to recruit and retain consumers on an ongoing basis. What is more real-world than the state of this job market? How many of your customers (including those you are hoping to acquire) are struggling to find a new gig? How might you inspire confidence in their abilities and help set them up for success with a new work wardrobe and a headshot? How might you shine a light on their successes? A massive congratulations to the RTR team who put this event together and to all you other brands out there — MORE OF THIS KIND OF CUSTOMER-OBSESSED MARKETING IN 2024 👏

The system and the math rule. Just three years ago, Renewcell ’s maket cap topped $1b on Nasdaq. That same year, it was named as one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies in the world. The company raised equity fo finance a full sale #recycling plant in Sundsvall Sweden that ran on 100% renewable energy and was awarded RCS 100 certification. The company sold its Circulose fiber to Levi Strauss & Co.’s, Calvin Klein, ZARA SA, Tommy Hilfiger and Ganni A/S among others. H&M was also a customer, provideed Renewcell with a five year offtake agreement and invested equity in the company. The company’s ambition was to recycle more than 1.4 billion t shirts every year by 2030. Renewcell’s endline is “we make fashion #circular”….and they appeared well on their way. And yet, over the weekend, sadly, the courageous compay declared bankruptcy. ⭕️This announcement reinforces the reality that fashion circularity remains conceptually persuasive and practically no where. 🧮 Notwithstanding fantastical goals (e.g. H&M has committed to a fully circular model by 2030, adidas, Nike, Gucci, Crocs and many other #fashion brands tout their circular commitment and models, as well)…the technology, regulations, infrastructure and math don’t work. As long as virgin fibers are cheaper than upcylced fibers, innovative technology companies wil struggle. According to Paul Dillinger, Levi’s Head of Global Product Innovation, “Somehow, the civic engagement and collective understanding that it’s not just doable, but necessary, hasn’t permeated our collective social behavior.” Absent such a shift in zietgeist, different rule and incentives need to be enacted if fashion is to get beyond its current level of < 1% fully circular systems. Renewcell is a great example of how quickly a startup can go from darling to done. And a good reminder that you never know what's going on behind the scenes of that company you envy. If you are struggling to build your own impact focused solution and up late worrying how you'll pay the bills, you are not alone. There simply aren't enough brands willing to pay for these solutions despite their bold claims that they want to improve. Maybe this shows we need better positive incentives for brands to proactively partner with impact oriented companies/orgs, or for consumers to give it a try? At the end of the day, my thoughts always circled back to something that truly challenged me. Can we make sustainability profitable? Can we make solutions that actually make/save money for brands so they line up to grab them? As someone who's been in this space a long time, I believe we do need to continue to fixate on this missing link if we ever hope to truly make strides.

After reading the article on Fashion Network about the clash between Cora Corré and Carlo D'Amario, I’ve been thinking about the bold decision to preserve Vivienne Westwood's legacy through a foundation dedicated to maintaining her style and values. Instead of merely watching the brand become a producer of low-quality plastic bags that sell purely because of their logo, Cora has chosen a path focused on honoring the true essence of the brand. This decision is a challenge to the commercial reality where money often dictates outcomes, and mass-market demands set the rules. The real question is: can such a bold initiative stand up to the pressures of commercialization, or will the drive for quick profits overshadow it? The creation of the foundation and Cora’s determination offer hope for maintaining authenticity, but history shows how difficult it is to resist the global market's forces. Regardless of how things unfold, watching this struggle is a valuable lesson for anyone who cares about culture and heritage in fashion. Did you feel it? Tremors ran through the industry recently with the announcement of Renewcell's bankruptcy. And the angst among environmental advocates was palpable. Then, the finger-pointing started. Teeth were gnashed, and hands were wrung. Renewcell’s management took heat, as did their customers — the brands. Indeed, Renewcell’s hype seemed to have failed to live up to the realities of brand interest and suffered from limitations built into its supply chain. Ultimately, the company needed more time to perfect its product, processes, and access to the market. Sure, the environmental community was disappointed, but it was also a wake-up call to snap out of the sustainability echo chamber and reengage with our industry’s realities. Renewcell struggled with the Catch-22 many start-ups face in many ways: building a viable product while simultaneously creating demand. It’s tough. Renewcell may have failed, but that’s also the process in business: trial and error. Fail today to succeed tomorrow. It’s capitalism, folks. The apparel industry should learn from Renewcell’s experience and indeed bankruptcy. There’s a deepening tension in our industry between those who want to address many of its shortcomings and those who only feel compelled to change something, at least once they have to.
