A new report published this month by the Wellbeing Research Centre and International Baccalaureate shines a light on the real need to attend to teacher wellbeing. Below are what I believe to be 5 important statements made in the report, with additional evidence to support the now pressing need to establish systems and climates which foster and sustain high levels of teacher wellbeing. Not only is this ethical, in service of those who are working within the profession, but research consistently shows us that 'well teachers promote well students', so the benefits of looking after teacher wellbeing extend far beyond the individual’s subjective happiness. This most recent report goes as far as to suggest that the impact of teacher wellbeing is so important to the functioning of a school that it should be one of the first factors that is considered when looking at improving wellbeing across the school community. Japanese teachers are grappling with long hours and heavy workloads, resulting in significant stress and mental health issues. Facing the education budget shrinking, the lack of resources and administrative support is making the situation worse. Teachers often work over 14 hours a day and on average 96 hours of overtime a month, far exceeding the legal cap (yet compensation is way lower than most VC or Financial professions comparable to workload). The high expectations from the community and the school system contribute to their stress and the outlook is dire, in Tokyo, there are only 1.1 applicants for primary school teachers for opening vacancies. To me this is not just a problem that localized in the developed nations but it's a global trend that need for systemic changes to primary level education.
