My new article was published online in Culture and Organization today!!! 🎉 🎉 🎉 ❗ It starts with a provocative question: What if we focus on power in intercultural communication for a change, instead of explaining behavior with culture as usual? We might find that what we interpret as 'cultural differences' can actually be based on power asymmetries that are rooted in varying levels of language proficiency! 💡 🔹 The study demonstrates that overlooking the role of language differences in intercultural encounters might lead to stereotyping processes. 🔹 Taking the example of international management higher education, I show how students with self-evaluated stronger English proficiency regularly draw on culture as explanatory factor when describing their perceptions of ‘weaker’ English speakers’engagement in teaching and learning activities. 🔹 Language-related power asymmetries get therefore masked as ‘cultural differences’. 🔹 At the same time, evaluations of language proficiency differences might also be used to resist cultural explanations. 👉 The article is available open access under the following link: https://lnkd.in/eiXjq4g2 Thank you to the Publication Fund of the BFH Wirtschaft for supporting my work on the article! 🙏 BFH Wirtschaft Sven Feurer Sebastian Gurtner GEM&L Culture and Organization Taylor & Francis Group #InterculturalCommunication #LanguageDiversity #CulturalDifferences #Power #EnglishAsMediumOfInstruction

Inspired by Insights on Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) Recently, I had the opportunity to delve into Niina Kovalainen’s doctoral dissertation, "The Role of Intercultural Communicative Competence in Transnational Educational and Occupational Fields." The comprehensive research on the importance of intercultural communication skills in today’s globalized and virtual work environments resonated deeply with me. Kovalainen’s findings underscore the critical need for these competencies in both higher education and professional settings, particularly as we navigate the complexities of a post-pandemic world. I am inspired to integrate these insights into my teaching philosophy. As per the dissertation, intercultural communication competence is implemented through some strategies in the Finnish educational environment of different levels such as: at the individual, organizational, and national levels to ensure that students, educators, and institutions are equipped to handle the diversity and global interconnectedness of modern society. Thus, Finland ensures that the graduates produced by the vocational education institutes are well-prepared for the demands of both the local and international labor markets. It also fosters a culture of inclusivity and global engagement! #InterculturalCompetence #VocationalEducation #Teaching #GlobalSkills
