The goal? 🌍 𝑺𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍-𝑪𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑹𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒔 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒎 𝒊𝒏 𝑪𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒃𝒓𝒊𝒂 🌿 Roots tourism, where members of diaspora communities visit their ancestral homeland to reconnect with their roots and identity, can play a key role in the sustainable development of tourist destinations. This study, published in the Journal of Vacation Marketing, explores how roots tourism contributes to socio-cultural sustainability, focusing on the experiences of tourists who visited Calabria, Italy. 🇮🇹 The findings show that roots tourism can have a positive impact on destination’s socio-cultural fabric, strengthening local traditions, promoting intercultural bonds, and supporting the local community. SDG-17: Partnerships For The Goals. Theresa Auer, a researcher from Germany, recently embarked on an early-stage study titled Community-Based Tourism in Mandalika. Her research focuses on understanding the role of the Sasak Tribe in Lombok, particularly their involvement in the economic, environmental, and cultural aspects of community-based tourism (CBT). During her one-month visit, Theresa aims to collaborate closely with the Sasak community to gain valuable insights into their perspectives and participation in local tourism activities. This project marks the initial phase of the Fair Tourism Foundation's initiative to promote sustainable and inclusive tourism practices in the region. The study’s primary goal is to collect comprehensive data that can be used to safeguard the rights of the Sasak people while fostering better policies for sustainable tourism development. By highlighting the community’s experiences and challenges, the research intends to ensure that CBT initiatives not only respect cultural heritage but also provide long-term benefits to the local population. Peru has introduced ten new routes to access the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu during the high season from June 1 to October 15, 2024, and December 30 to 31, 2024. The visitor capacity at this wonder of the world has also been expanded to 5,600 per day during this period. 'The routes are articulated and programmed with established capacity and shifts to preserve the archaeological heritage and guarantee an optimal visitor experience,' according to the press release. This initiative aligns with Peru's commitment to sustainable tourism practices, which aim to protect its emblematic destinations like Machu Picchu, the first tourism destination to achieve carbon-neutral international certification.
