🎉 Thrilled to share the launch of our newest research program at CID, Global Education and Research: Unleashing Potential (GEAR:UP), led by CID Faculty Director Asim Ijaz Khwaja, HKS Professor Michela Carlana, and HGSE Professor Emiliana Vegas. The GEAR:UP initiative aims to support research and programs to transform education systems. Our driving research questions: ✔️ Education at its most impactful, has always been a highly personalized journey. How can we shift the focus from producing students who are adept at standardized tests to cultivating skills that create more productive and socially impactful individuals? ✔️ Researchers and policymakers increasingly recognize that a person's learning journey requires a more comprehensive systems approach. The shift from viewing education issues discretely to viewing education as a collective problem involves a full-spectrum view across time and space, necessitating collaboration across various types of people and actors. How can we more effectively identify frictions stakeholders face that prevent them from effectively educating children? ✔️ The systems approach can be a game changer in implementing personalized learning journeys. However, the current landscape of data and tools available prevent actors from adopting a systems approach. Rethinking Education for the 21st Century 💡 As technology and society rapidly evolve, our traditional education systems struggle to keep up.    The models of teaching that worked a century ago are no longer fit for preparing students for today’s world.   Students have unprecedented access to information outside the classroom, rendering old teaching methods obsolete. Meanwhile, the skills required for success—creativity, critical thinking, adaptability—are at odds with the rigid, standardised curricula still in place.   Education is also facing economic disruption. Public institutions, stretched for funding, compete with cost-effective, technology-enabled learning platforms. Learners are taking control of their education, seeking alternatives to the traditional university model.   So, what’s the way forward? Experts argue that we need a fundamental shift—one that puts 21st-century learners at the centre. This means moving away from rote memorisation and standardised tests, and embracing learning experiences that foster deeper understanding, interdisciplinary problem-solving, and social-emotional development.   Technology will play a vital role in this transformation, enabling personalised, adaptive learning. But the real opportunity lies in how technology integrates with innovative teaching methods.   We must also align education with the evolving needs of employers and society. This will require collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers to keep curricula and credentials relevant.   Ultimately, rethinking education is not just about updating what we teach or integrating new tools. It’s about adopting a mindset of continuous reinvention, viewing education as a dynamic, evolving system that must adapt to the world around it. Did you know the learning losses from school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic are still affecting students worldwide? ❗ According to the latest TIMSS 2023 data, students lost the equivalent of half a year’s worth of learning in 2 core subjects, mathematics and science. The impact is uneven: girls, linguistic minorities, and low achievers were disproportionately affected, which further deepened pre-existing inequalities. Countries with longer school closures saw the biggest declines, highlighting how deeply the pandemic disrupted education. This is not just an education crisis, it is a challenge to future economic and social stability. Recovery requires urgent action: ✔️Providing targeted tutoring and remedial programs ✔️Investing in digital tools and inclusive policies ✔️Prioritizing support for the most vulnerable students The pandemic revealed the fragility of education systems.
