15 sanctions packages and counting… 🇪🇺🇺🇦 The EU remains ready to further limit Russia’s ability to wage war, including by further sanctions. Today, the Council adopted a 15th package of economic and individual restrictive measures with the objective of further limiting Russia’s ability to wage its illegal, unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine. These measures are designed to address the circumvention of EU sanctions through targeting the Russian “shadow fleet” as well as weaken Russia’s military and industrial complex.

The United States has historically used sanctions as a tool to influence the behavior of countries regarding arms purchases. For example, sanctions against countries like Iran and North Korea have been aimed at curbing their military capabilities by restricting access to U.S. military technology. However, the effectiveness of these sanctions is increasingly being challenged as countries seek alternatives from China and Russia.

🌍New U.S. Sanctions on Vessels Delivering Iranian Weapons to Russia In a significant development, the U.S. Treasury has announced #sanctions on four vessels and ten individuals involved in the delivery of Iranian weapons to #Russia. 💢UK defense ministry: On 11 March 2024, research from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) indicated that Russian arms exports fell by 53% between the periods 2014-2018 and 2019-2023. As a result, Russia dropped from second to third place in the global arms export rankings. Russian arms export volumes were 52% lower in 2023 than in 2022, while only 12 countries received major Russian arms in 2023, compared to 31 in 2019. The decline is likely due to several factors including Russia prioritising equipment for operations in Ukraine due to continuous battlefield losses, and reduced customer demand due to the risk of associated sanctions and global condemnation of Russia's responsibility for the war

New Sanctions Imposed on Iran and Russia for Ballistic Missile Transfers On September 10, the United States, along with several European countries(UK, France, Germany), imposed sanctions on Iran and Russia following Iran’s delivery of ballistic missiles to Russia. The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned 10 individuals and 6 entities linked to these transfers, highlighting the continued cooperation between Iranian defense officials and Russia in support of its war in Ukraine. Key figures sanctioned include: Rouhollah Katebi: Point of contact between Iran’s defense ministry and Russia. Ebrahim Bahrami: Facilitated the training of Russian military personnel in Iran. Ali Jafar Abadi: Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force’s Salam Farsi Space Command.
