This really depends on your goals. Is your goal to connect with community and build audiences or to meet with agents and seek representation? You have to think about these. When you work on your film festival strategy, start with this tier of festivals. Look out for the “When” because that determines your premiere status. Then you want to look into niche film festivals like the Cascade Festival for African Films or the American Black Film Festival. Once these festivals respond look into your local film festivals. Also, set aside a budget for traveling.

Indonesia’s inaugural JAFF Market (Jogja Asian Film Festival Market) has partnered with the Adelaide Film Festival (AFF) to bring two Australian projects to the JAFF Future Project platform, held alongside the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival in Yogyakarta. Awards in the film industry are a strange affair. I have sat on over twenty awards juries at film festivals, even chairing several, and they are never entirely fair. Egos, friendships and petty jealousies come to the fore and always influence those present. However, the new BAFTA voting system is brilliant and about as fair and true as I think it can be. Now, they have dispensed with DVDs, which only benefited the well-funded distributors (the only time I ever sent out DVDs to members, it cost my company just short of £12,000). This means that a film distributed by a small company with unknown filmmakers and actors can stand alongside the $100 million studio movie. I am so pleased to see such a wonderful cornucopia of documentaries entered. In the old days, it was just not viable. They even suggest that all members be divided into groups, and then they recommend that the group watch a certain number of films. This is a genius idea, as the group's films are diverse and always introduce members to films they might not normally see. Because the selected films are only nine in number, even the busiest BAFTA member has a chance of seeing them all. Many members I know ignore their grouping, which is a shame as it does give all filmmakers the same bite at the cherry, which is rather marvellous. It is the fairest judging that I have ever come across. Ramping up the Kootenay Film Industry. Film producers have been coming to the Kootenays for years to capture the area’s diverse natural beauty and rural culture as the backdrop for productions. To fully harness the economic opportunities associated with a robust filming environment, Community Futures Central Kootenay (CFCK) conducted a feasibility study to explore the challenges and opportunities around growing the sector. The project, supported by the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior (ETSI-BC) shows that with the right infrastructure in place, including a local film studio, significantly more filming can be attracted to the region. Yesterday I posted a short article called Rethinking Documentary Film Festival Policies: A Case for Modifying Premiere Requirements and Towards a More Collaborative Vision. I just added the following idea in it namely awarding distribution opportunities for top audience-pleasing films: In addition, festivals could consider leveraging audience awards to enhance a film's journey. For example, the top 10 audience-pleasing films at a festival could be awarded distribution opportunities in the region where the festival is held. This practice would provide filmmakers with tangible financial rewards while strengthening the connection between festivals and local audiences. #filmfestival #documentary #documentaryfilmfestival
