"Ok Jess, you talk a lot about how your prints sell- can you prove it?" Great question, let me tell you a story. 😊 When I got the opportunity to work on H&M's Newborn department, the assortment was selling reasonably well. Newborn clothes are a need item after all- there will always be a market for it. However, the print assortment was outdated and unclear. And it was because of this I saw an opportunity: a way to boost sales on a high-volume assortment that was already doing well. I wanted the Newborn assortment to not just be a need- but also a want! So I redesigned the offering, creating a contemporary print collection with an updated aesthetic. I pushed for coordination within the assortment, new motifs, bolder graphics for the online assortment, and more. The final collection was trend-lead and cohesive. The result? It achieved top selling product positioning in the whole company (beating out men's and womenswear) for a total of 6 weeks. There was a significant increase in Newborn sales and more importantly, prompted H&M to expand their unisex offerings to both Toddler and Kids categories. The department still creates updated versions of my designs to this day. So there's the proof. What Do You Believe?🤔 What gets you out of bed each morning? Why do you wear the clothes you wear? Or eat the meals you do? Why buy product A and not B? In the words of Simon Sinek , “People don’t buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it.” This post was supposed to be about how Eugene Schwartz changed my life in October, but after attending a training on vision and personal branding this weekend, I felt compelled to share some hard-hitting insights I’ve been ruminating on. When someone asks, “What does your brand do?” most of us tend to default to the WHAT-HOW-WHY formula. Here’s what I mean: Imagine Brand A is a manufacturer of leather handbags. If I asked Brand A to create an advertising message, it would typically look like this: WHAT: “We make beautifully crafted leather handbags.” HOW: “They’re designed with the finest materials and handcrafted for exceptional quality.” And finally, the cliché: “BUY NOW!” Not bad, right? Very cutesy😂 But it doesn’t leave much impact. All you've done is make the consumer aware of your existence, but they don’t feel anything about your brand. No connection, no loyalty. But if we flip the script and start with WHY, you have a brand that resonates, like #LouisVuitton, #Chanel, or #Gucci. Here’s how Brand A’s message could sound if we start with WHY: WHY: “We believe a handbag should do more than hold your belongings—it should empower you to express your style and values boldly.” HOW: “That’s why we partner with skilled artisans to design each bag with ethically sourced leather and innovative techniques.” WHAT: “The result? A collection of stunning leather handbags that are as enduring and unique as the people who carry them.” Now you’re drawn to Brand A right? Not because it's the best leather bag in the market, but because you believe in what it stands for. You didn’t just buy a bag—you bought into an idea, a belief, a feeling. The #brands that truly stand the test of time understand this: "People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it." I believe Louis Vuitton’s Women’s Fashion Campaign, The Iconic GO-14 and Capucines Bag, illustrates this perfectly.
