❕ Long post alert ❕ Lessons from my time off ONE: Surprising support I honestly did not know what kind of response I would get from friends, family, and previous colleagues when sharing the news that I wasn’t working. Not that I was expecting negativity, but this was my first time not being employed in 10 years, so I was in unfamiliar territory. I was met with a myriad of “congratulations” and “good for you.” Some might expect reactions like, “Oh no, what are you going to do?” or “Do you have something lined up?” It was amazing to see this generational shift toward celebrating taking time off and slowing down to figure out what’s next. It highlights the cultural shift of working to live rather than living to work. TWO: It takes time to reset Those first few weeks, your phone remains glued to your hand, as if you’re expecting notifications constantly. It took at least two weeks for this mindset to quiet down and shift. I started to put the phone down… for hours. I stopped feeling tethered to being available 24/7 and got back to myself. I picked up books, took long walks, enjoyed the outdoors, and even grocery shopped mid-week. Let me tell you—it was glorious. In this process, you start to remember what inspires you. By stepping away, you get closer to yourself. You start reflecting on what your career has provided you thus far—and what it hasn’t. Most importantly, you gain insight into what you need—not just what you want—for your future opportunities to truly make you happy. THREE: Setting my standards During this reflection period, as you start exploring your next potential opportunities, you realize what is truly important to you. You start to create a mental checklist—boxes that become more and more concrete in defining what you need. Your self-worth and confidence return as you recognize the value of your experience, and you commit to not just taking the next opportunity that comes along. It’s like coming out of a past relationship. You’ve learned more about what was once right and wrong in previous environments, and you carry that forward. Being selective and knowing your worth is crucial—because in the end, that’s exactly the kind of employee companies want to show up. Lastly, the job market is tough. I believe it always has been. For eight years, I sat on the other side of the table. I interviewed, hired, trained, and grew teams. Now, I’m sitting on the other side of that table—and I’m excited. Fresh starts, new perspectives, and opportunities to push yourself—that’s what I’m after.

I've debated posting about this for a while now but figure it's a better time than any so here we go! Last week, I was unexpectedly laid off and am currently on the hunt for my next challenge. However, I want to use this post to be a resource and offer my two cents to others, especially young professionals like myself, who find themselves in a similar situation. Let's face it, no one plans to be laid off, but how we react when life throws us a curveball plays a big part in where it takes us next. So without further ado, here are my unscientifically proven methods for turning the page after being laid off: 1. Give yourself a day or two to feel how you need to feel: Obviously, being laid off comes with many complex feelings, most of which are not overly positive. I made the mistake of immediately getting to work on my job hunt which didn't fully allow me to process how I felt. My advice to anyone in a similar situation is that the applications can wait a day or two, those jobs will still be posted then. Be easy on yourself and give yourself a couple of days to decompress. 2. Keep your weekday routine the same: I found that not changing my weekday routine has allowed me to maintain that "at work" mindset while searching for my next opportunity. If I used to be at my desk at 7:15, that's when you'll find me there now. The same goes for working hours, sleeping, eating, etc. Maintaining those habits has aided immensely in my productivity and motivation when it comes to identifying my next opportunity. 3. Re-establish former good habits or invest time in establishing new ones: Not every second of your day needs to be focused on the job hunt. With added flexibility, I've found value in investing an hour or so per day in a habit that I've lost over the past couple of years. For me, it's getting back to a consistent workout schedule, but regardless of what your habit is, establishing consistency now will allow you to better maintain that habit when the next opportunity comes along. 4. Spend at least 3-4 hours daily on professional development: Now is a better time than any to focus on your professional development, don't be afraid to use it. Whether it's searching for your next opportunity, optimizing your resume, obtaining certifications, or growing your industry knowledge, spend a chunk of each day working on it. For me, it's studying to obtain my Salesforce Admin and Salesforce MC Admin Certifications. How much time per day you dedicate is up to you, I've just found that 4 hours is obtainable without becoming overwhelming. 5. Reach out to your connections: I've found this past week to be a great opportunity to not only make new connections but to reconnect with past connections. It could be a former boss, coworker, or someone you used to run into at networking events. Just shoot them a message, you never know what might happen. However, personal experience has taught me that it can lead to a drop in self-respect and professional freedom. Ask yourself, “Is the reason I left still there?” Whether it was a toxic work environment, lack of career growth, or poor work-life balance, rejoining could bring back unwanted memories and impact your productivity. Returning may not be as glamorous as it seems—your boss might think you have nowhere else to go, or colleagues may question your commitment. It’s crucial to evaluate if rejoining aligns with your long-term career goals or if it will keep you stuck in an unhealthy environment. Ultimately, every decision has its pros and cons. But if your self-respect and freedom are on the line, remember: nothing is more important than being valued at your workplace. Rooting for you in making the best decision for your career!

In the early chapters of my career story, I joined a company brimming with excitement. The first month was thrilling. Product launch parties, outings, all fun stuff. But then, things changed. The second month hit hard. I saw the company’s toxicity. Long hours, late nights, tasks not mine, all blamed on me. My manager, HR’s relative, shielded from complaints. It felt biased and unfair. One day, after hours of discouragement, I decided to quit with no backup plan. It was a tough call. But I knew it was right for my well-being. I haven’t regretted it. Not once. Fortunately, I found a new job in a couple of days. I learnt that, you’ve got to stand up for yourself. Even if no one else understands. It's crazy to think about how getting laid off has turned into a positive experience. It gave me extra time to work on my homework and finish the quarter. It has also given me time to work on side projects (stay tuned for more on this). I'm more excited about the future than I have ever been. It got me thinking about my experience and what it has meant so I wanted to share this. Life has a way of throwing us curveballs, and sometimes, our plans take unexpected turns. In moments like these, staying active and open-minded becomes our greatest strength. Staying Busy Keeping your hands and mind occupied not only fosters productivity but also helps maintain focus. Whether it’s tackling a new project, diving into a hobby, or revisiting old passions, staying engaged is key to personal growth. Exploring New Avenues The world is brimming with opportunities waiting to be discovered. When one door closes, another opens—sometimes it’s a door you never thought to knock on before. Be curious, take risks, and explore paths that challenge you and align with your values. Connecting with Others We’re not meant to navigate life alone. Building and nurturing connections can open doors, provide support, and inspire new ideas.
