Today I participated in a dynamic face-to-face meeting in Brussels to prepare an application for the joint action on personalised cancer medicine. I am excited to lead a work package on tertiary prevention, which will include a pilot on liquid biopsy and ctDNA testing for minimal residual disease (MRD). The discussions highlighted varying perspectives on structuring this WP and pilot. Key elements to consider include implementation strategies, sustainability, a patient-oriented approach, capacity building, education for Member States, accessibility and acceptability of techniques, shared decision-making, digital innovation, patient-reported outcomes, and survivorship. How can we best integrate these elements to ensure meaningful impact? I will speculate on this in the days to come, but feel free to share insights and ideas on building a comprehensive and effective framework. At ISPOR—The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research Europe 2024, the MSD team shared findings from our Readiness Assessment for Cervical Cancer Elimination in Europe. This comprehensive assessment provides a comparative analysis of countries’ preparedness to eliminate cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers, offering insights to drive health progress across the region. 🎯 We are proud to contribute to the #EU Council recommendation to combat vaccine-preventable cancers, which supports Member States in increasing prevention efforts and improving data monitoring. We aim to inspire action, encouraging more stakeholders to consolidate and share data on cervical cancer prevention, ultimately driving more effective decision-making across the region. #ISPOR #CervicalCancer #HPV

📢$80 Billion for Cancer Drugs, But LMICs Are Left Behind: Time to Rethink Research for Global Equity 📢 Over $80 billion is spent annually on cancer drug development, yet many innovations fail to reach low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), which bear 70% of the global cancer burden. Conducting cancer #clinicaltrials in LMICs is crucial for creating effective and equitable care. By running trials in LMICs, we can ensure the safety, efficacy and effectiveness of new therapies are tested on diverse populations, making them suitable for everyone, not just those in wealthier nations. This approach not only provides patients in these regions with early access to new therapies but also helps boost local clinical research capacity as an important driver for quality improvement of service delivery. At City Cancer Challenge, we support cities in addressing local service readiness to ensure the most essential service delivery infrastructure is in place to deliver appropriate care and enable local systems to fully attain the best possible outcomes from oncology medicines. Building clinical research capacity in LMICs can be an important driver of such readiness as it helps to upgrade essential services, strengthen quality improvement programmes and train (and retain) professionals committed to excellence. Thank you Darryl Sleep, MD, Amgen, Bob Li, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Cure4Cancer for cohosting this session with C/Can and Foreign Policy at #UNGA79 to raise awareness of this critical subject and Dr. Nwamaka Lasebikan, Nigerian Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), for sharing your perspective from, C/Can city Abuja, Nigeria. Without building the system’s capacity, innovation will continue to bypass those who need it most. It’s time to rethink #cancerresearch and focus on closing the care gap. 🌍💪 https://lnkd.in/eYnGET6M (Foreign Policy @UNGA79 video) PS: Thank you Diogo de Sousa Neves for your support with this post. #wordsmatters #GlobalHealth #HealthEquity #Oncology

Breast cancer is an issue that is very close to my heart, but it is also a major challenge in Europe and globally. In Europe, significant prevention gaps persist-including incomplete breast cancer screening programmes that lack consistency across EU Member States, variation in screening programme participation rates related to socio-economic inequalities, geographical disparities, and unequal access to healthcare services. This is why I am proud to be involved in the planning process for an upcoming policy debate for the MELIORA EU Horizon Project, which will involve important discussions on how to address these gaps on EU, national, and local levels. You can find more information and register for the event below ⬇️⬇️
🌍 As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, our commitment to prevention and early detection continues! With #BreastCancer cases expected to rise over 40% by 2040, the need for sustainable prevention and accessible early detection strategies has never been greater. To maintain momentum beyond October, MELIORA, in collaboration with the EHMA - European Health Management Association, is hosting an online policy debate to advance these critical goals across Europe. 📅 Date: 20th November 2024 ⏰ Time: 17:00 CET 💻 Format: Virtual Confirmed speakers include: • MEP and European Parliament Vice President Nicolae Ștefănuță • MEP Elena Kountoura • Fiorita Poulakaki, Vice President at EUROPA DONNA - The European Breast Cancer Coalition More info and registration! 👉 https://shorturl.at/PeR8c #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #MELIORA #CancerPrevention Harokopio University of Athens Karolinska Institutet INCLIVA Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Pagalbos onkologiniams ligoniams asociacija (POLA) Asociación Española de Fundaciones European Food Information Council (EUFIC) PredictBy Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) EXUS AI LABS BioAssist RISA Sicherheitsanalysen GmbH Eticas AI European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA)

Despite the progress made in our health system, it is not enough for us to be at the European average. We need to take steps to move up and be among the leading countries. As far as the National Cancer Plan is concerned, let us take inspiration from the COVID example to make quick and effective moves. An important step will be taken within 2025, when the EU will activate the new regulation and launch joint assessments of cancer treatments. This will reduce the waiting time to innovative treatments, which currently in Greece is more than 600 days. With the new European procedures, we can ensure faster access for patients to these treatments. In addition, e-transition and the use of data and AI can facilitate the patient journey, improving access to treatments and making the healthcare system more efficient. We need to harness data and eliminate criteria that delay access. As PIF, we are able and we want to accelerate access to innovative therapies by bringing appropriate and best practices to our country as well as promoting clinical trials, research and the development of new mechanisms that will give hope to cancer patients. #pifgreece
