Probably the most remarkable/unique organisation I’ve come across over my career is The Daily Maverick. As most newsrooms are halving their journalists, DM is doubling theirs. As most online news publishers are putting up paywalls, DM remains free. Were it not for The Daily Maverick, Zuma’s faction could easily have tipped South Africa over the edge. Styli C. and Branko Brkic have built this organisation from scratch, amidst great headwinds. A remarkable feat of leadership. The thing that stands out for me is that the organisation is built, fundamentally, on character. - Goodness - Generosity - Bravery So simple yet so rare. News organisations all over the world are looking at how DM did it with a sense of marvel. They will try to replicate parts of their approach (which DM has made freely available) but replicating these character traits won’t be as easy. It’s been a singular highlight of my career to play a small role in helping The Daily Maverick progress. They were sceptical about leadership when I started, but they are now convinced. It’s a wonderful transition to witness. Unsurprisingly, DM leaders mirror the character of Styli and Branko, which is a very good thing for the world. I am most grateful for what DM has done for SA - the election this week will be more free and fair because of this incredible group of people and the standout organisation they’ve built. 🙏🇿🇦

Media Marketing Compliance helped the Association of National Advertisers study the market for 'Principal' (or 'Proprietary') Media, and the results have landed. The report is incredibly thorough and provides great guidance for advertisers. While not a new phenomenon, PM is increasing dramatically and becoming a much more controversial way for Media Agencies to make extra profit at the expense of transparency into their true revenues. Advertisers should take a firm view on whether this is in their best interests.
