Do you know that Fire Service TICs are NOT Thermometers? 1) Fire Service TICs are qualitative by design. These devices are meant to see thermal patterns, anomalies, and cannot be adjusted to account for variables to measure temperatures with accuracy. 2) Many of these devices are off in variance between +/- 5 degrees Fahrenheit to as much as +/- 41 degrees Fahrenheit. The ANSI standard allows for these devices to be “off” as much as +/- 36 degrees Fahrenheit. 3) NFPA 1801-2021 removed the spot temperature from TI Basic due to it being cited in three separate LODD incidents. “Despite all thermal imager manufacturer user manual warnings not to use temperature measurements to make tactical decisions, it became apparent in three recent NIOSH Firefighter Fatality Investigation reports that there is a lack of understanding on behalf of the fire service features capabilities” (NFPA 1801-2021 Chapter 6). Thermal patterns or temperatures seen on the outside surface of an electrical panel are going to be much colder than what's really happening on the inside. Properly trained thermographers and NFPA 70B understand this too, you need direct line of sight to see the problem.
NFPA requirements to have a direct line of sight and be done by Trained Certified Thermographers!
