Recently, we sent material to Africa to participate in a field trial conducted by One Acre Fund to identify promising solutions with strong environmental profiles in the fight against Fall Armyworm. Ensuring global access to our innovations is core to the GreenLight Bio mission. We look forward to advancing the work against FAW and working with local stakeholders to find new ways to improve agricultural productivity in Africa. As a pest, FAW is estimated to cause upwards of $9B in annual maize crop loss each year in Sub-Saharan Africa alone. Yield losses can approach 60%.  This is particularly challenging to smallholder farmers. One Acre Fund is a leading non-profit serving millions of farmers in nine Sub-Saharan countries where most of the continent’s food is grown. They are a champion of smallholder farmers in Africa, putting them first to improve lives and communities. Getting effective and sustainable products in the hands of the people who need them is difficult. This trial is the first step on that journey and we are grateful to have One Acre Fund leading the charge. 

With the incoming funds for the project 'Nourish Tanzania: Fertile Soil, Flourishing Future!' on Global Giving, we had a proposal from a local agricultural officer to start the project 'Compost Manure Preparation'. The aim is to prepare with local farmers compost manure for one acre to show how it is done in a project period of 3 months. The total cost were budgeted for app. $1,000.-, so with the $400 we have now, a start can be made, maybe with the hard labour work done by the student farmers. 😅 In this way we can cut some costs we hope. The farmers who learn this method can teach other farmers (F2F) how it is done, so the seeds has to be planted to grow into a new habit with less fertilezer and pesticides. 😃 The proposal is available for interested parties and a small support donation can always be made on https://lnkd.in/eTQSaEKk

As an awards body, we don't just look to celebrate others doing great things; we want to ensure we're doing what we can to 'walk the talk' too. One of the ways we do this is by supporting the amazing work of Cool Earth: - we donate 1% of all turnover from sponsorship, entry fees and ticket sales, - we give a £5 donation per paid entry via their clever CarbonCork initiative - we help to protect rainforest canopies via their carbon capture projects, to match the emissions from our event that we aren’t able to remove. We're delighted that we can play this small part in helping Cool Earth to work with communities from the Amazon to Papua New Guinea in finding creative solutions to rainforest protection - solutions that reduce deforestation rates by up to 82%. In the Amazon, where illegal mining threatens lives and nature, a community has started sustainable fish farming. This project is not only providing food but also offering an economic alternative to practices that destroy rainforest. It shows how supporting local ideas can address global challenges. Meanwhile, in Papua New Guinea, a water and sanitation project is having rainforest-saving benefits. Health centres are seeing fewer patients, showing how basic improvements can have a big impact on people's health and the environment. 🌍 It doesn't matter where in the world you are, parents want to do good by their children and provide them with a brighter future. 🫶 Mr Phakati's middle name is Special - and it is quite special the work they are doing now to help their four children.
