The latest manuscript of my PhD project has been published in Journal of Biotechnology (Elsevier)! This was a collaborative project between the National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada and Polytechnique Montréal. This study investigates the application of oxygen transfer rate (OTR) monitoring, traditionally used in bioreactors, to shake flasks through advancements in sensing technology. By analyzing OTR data, key time-of-action points (such as induction, temperature shifts, and feeding initiation) can be precisely optimized by evaluating oxygen consumption during different culture stages. The findings reveal that antibody production imposes a metabolic burden, slowing cell growth. However, by strategically timing the induction of antibody production, a twofold increase in viable cell density and a 30% boost in protein yield can be obtained. New Achievement in Biotechnology in Syria - New Publication From the Faculty of Technical Engineering - Department of Biotechnology Engineering - University of Aleppo Scientific Publication in the Journal of BioScience and Biotechnology Titled: Frugal method for extracting DNA from saliva suitable for low-budget labs and usable in PCR assays This research is a summary of a graduation project for the year 2024 in the Department of Biotechnology Engineering, we worked on for several months. The applied research discusses a simple method for extracting DNA from saliva using locally available materials in Syria, at an economical price and with environmentally friendly materials. It is noteworthy that several companies use toxic or carcinogenic materials for extraction. The method described in the research successfully extracts high-quality DNA with a concentration that competes with commercial methods in just 20 minutes, and it can be successfully used in PCR tests. The application of this method, from which a local kit was manufactured, can benefit molecular biology laboratories in universities in Syria and developing countries, in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, and biology. It also aids in empowering and training students in DNA extraction academically. it is a small step for biotech in here, but regarding our resources it is considered essential for development. Amrita Biotechnology Research shows a protein derived from the Vegetable Humminbird as a potential Antifungal Agent. #Amrita PhD student, Sandra San and co-authors have published their study as a paper titled: 'Vicilin, a chitin binding protein from Sesbania grandiflora: Structural insights and functional potential as an antifungal agent' in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules (Impact Factor: 7.7). Known as a medicinal plant, Sesbania grandiflora, a fast-growing shrub from the Fabaceae family, is extensively researched for its therapeutic properties. Using biotechnology and other methods, the study disclosed an abundant vicilin protein from the seeds, which was subsequently purified. Using chitin affinity chromatography, the team also showed anti-mycotic properties. The study was also co-authored by M.Sc. students Souparnika, Robin Mathew Cherian and Aswanth Rabil and involves Amrita professors, Dr. Sudarslal S, Dr. Jayashree Nair and Dr. Bipin Nair of our Amrita School of Biotechnology.
