"Meeting climate targets in healthcare without compromising clinical care requires a focus on both efficiency and responsibility. Identifying 'low hanging fruit' and swift solutions is key. Opportunities abound, especially in waste management, where medical disposables must be handled responsibly. At Life Healthcare, we transform food waste into compost, addressing challenges while contributing to society. We need to collaborate and not compete. Sustainability is not a race but a collective journey of learning and partnership." - Avanthi Parboosing, Chief People Officer, Life Healthcare #HBI2024 #healthcare #WasteManagement #MedicalDisposable #Sustainability #LifeHealthcare #Society #Collaboration #Partnership

Investing in a Sustainable Future: Why It's Becoming Harder Than Ever I would like to thank the organisers and the Techniker Krankenkasse for inviting me to participate in the panel discussion on sustainable healthcare at MEDICA - Leading International Trade Fair. Given the high #emissions of the German #economy and #healthcare sector, the highest in Europe, and their detrimental effects on the #health of the population, it is also important from a #social and #ethical perspective to move towards a net-zero healthcare system. In 2022 the German Federal Ministry of Health - Bundesministerium für Gesundheit - together with other key stakeholders, has made a formal commitment to reduce the carbon emissions of the healthcare sector. In recent years, the urgency to invest in a sustainable future and a livable planet has grown exponentially. The escalating climate #crisis, severe #biodiversity loss and #resource depletion are no longer distant threats - they are pressing issues that are already reshaping our world. In Germany, we are already experiencing the negative effects of climate change through flooded and destroyed #hospitals, a high number of #heat-related #deaths and increased incidence of #asthma and #tick-borne diseases. Drawing on the panel discussion, I reflect on why investing for sustainability has become so challenging and what this means for the future of our planet. As governments recognise the importance of sustainable #economies, regulations are becoming more prevalent. As a result, hospital climate managers are increasingly becoming paper tigers to meet regulatory requirements, rather than #changeagents for a different hospital culture. The current pace of change is slow and often focuses on #Scope 1 and 2 emissions without having a concrete roadmap for reducing them. Reliable data is critical to assessing the #environmental, #social and #governance (#ESG) impact of an investment. However, data quality and transparency remain significant hurdles. Although significant sustainable #transformations have taken place in the #Scandinavian countries and new emerging economies such as #Singapore and #Rwanda, the willingness to make sustainable changes has diminished as the changing political landscape has become more self-and nation-centred and #exploitative, moving away from the #commons and #social responsibility. The capacity for renewable #innovation has slowed, making change more difficult to achieve. Transforming #healthsystems towards #netzero is no longer a noble endeavour, optional or low-priority, but an urgent necessity. The journey is undoubtedly complex. But by understanding these challenges and working towards solutions, we can move closer to a sustainable healthcare system to improve life quality and reduce the burden of climate change related diseases. There is an urgent need for the #German government and the Federal Ministry of #Health to develop a roadmap, including resource allocation, on how this can be achieved.

Big thanks to those who were able to join us in this workshop on accelerating health system emissions reduction through the lens of energy, facilities and transport. The enthusiasm, expertise and generosity of those in the room was really inspiring and energising. I learned a lot on many topics, including all-electric hospitals, decommissioning gas, electrifying fleets, integrated transport planning, and so much more. Looking forward to bringing this all together as we co-develop our guide to health system emissions reduction in Australia. #sustainablehealthcare #climatehealth #TSHS
In July Transitions to Sustainable Health Systems Consortium convened an engaging workshop focused on Energy, Facilities, and Transport. Over two dynamic half-days, 48 participants from across Australia’s health sector delved into strategies to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, discussed enablers and barriers to change, and generated innovative ideas to tackle challenges. We gained valuable insights from: Kane Thornton (Clean Energy Council) on Australia’s energy transition Kendra Wasiluk (Monash University) on net zero in urban settings Rob Bunting (SA Health) on designing all-electric hospitals Emmerson Richardson (Transport Australia Society - TAs) on integrated sustainable transport Professor Ray Green (University of Melbourne) on biophilic design for health services This workshop marks a significant step towards a more sustainable health sector. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this journey! https://lnkd.in/g6YF5nFV #TSHSConsortium #SustainableHealth #EnergyEfficiency #HealthcareInnovation
