During today's Energy Council, Ministers will exchange views on the priorities for the next legislative cycle and the future of energy policy. Here are our views on how to promote affordable electricity 👉 https://lnkd.in/dKTSpQmP In 2025, the European Commission will put forward an 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 to support industries and households throughout the transition. To make #electricity more affordable, we need: ▪️ Massive deployment of more homegrown renewable and clean electricity ▪️ Electrification: in a net-zero scenario, direct electrification delivers three- to fivefold energy-efficiency improvements for end users, alongside the decarbonisation benefits of a renewable and clean energy mix. ▪️ Long-term contracts such as Power Purchase Agreements (#PPAs) and Contracts for Difference (#CfDs) help transfer the benefits of renewable and clean energy to consumers. ▪️ Mainstream flexibility both at the demand side and supply side. ▪️ Implementation of the agreed electricity #MarketDesign to empower consumers ⚠️ We caution interventions regarding energy markets: short-term measures – including certain recommendations in the #DraghiReport – could have the opposite of the intended effect by distorting market dynamics, increasing system costs and ultimately eroding investor confidence at a time when their capital is crucially needed. #energy #electrification #decarbonisation

Today (30 May 2024), Energy Ministers from the 27 EU Member States adopted Conclusions on Advancing Sustainable Electricity Grid Infrastructure on behalf of the Council of the European Union. The Ministers have agreed on a series of steps to support the deployment of clean #electricity infrastructure in the European Union, including: - holistic and integrated planning across all energy carriers - applying the ‘Energy Efficiency First’ principle - improved coordination between transmission and distribution levels - supporting flexibility, system adequacy and non-wire solutions - bottom-up coordination of national plans at regional level with a European approach. COGEN Europe welcomes the adoption of these Council Conclusions. "In order to meet its energy and climate ambitions, the EU must take an integrated approach to energy systems, fostering #energyefficiency and renewable energy across electricity, heat and gas grids," says COGEN Europe's Managing Director, Hans Korteweg. "Smart and efficient #cogeneration is embedded in Europe’s cities and industries, efficiently linking energy vectors at local level, reducing electricity system costs and strengthening security of supply. The expansion of cogeneration capacity must be prioritised in order to further enhance energy efficiency and resilience, whilst also enabling the efficient integration of #renewables and supporting #electrification." To deliver the energy transition, we need to empower Europe's energy infrastructure! Read our letter to the EU Energy Ministers 👉 https://lnkd.in/eUk3Kgcm.. With an estimated 70% of new renewable assets being connected at the distribution level by 2030, there is an urgent need for smartening and reinforcing Europe’s energy grid infrastructure. However, the current regulatory and financial framework is insufficient for the necessary infrastructure delivery. This is why we call on EU Energy Ministers to: ▪ Strategically upsize our distribution grids through anticipatory investments, while deploying grid-friendly flexibility. ▪ Ensure sufficient capital flows towards strengthening the EU’s electricity networks, where the uptake needs are expected to almost triple through 2050 from roughly 20 to 60%. This could be done by empowering national regulators, mobilising private equity, and introducing innovative funding mechanisms. ▪ Accelerate electrification to implicitly tackle affordability by spreading the development costs among more system users. ▪ Streamline permitting for grid build-out ▪ Secure access to critical materials and chemicals for the power system Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 | Leo Birnbaum | E.ON | Kristian Ruby | Cillian O'Donoghue | Savannah Altvater #Grids4Speed #energy #energytransition #electricity #electrification #decarbonisation

🚨 The European Commission's State of the Energy Union 2024 is out🚨 It highlights some critical points that will define the EU's path to achieving its 2030 climate and energy targets, many of which will have direct impacts on the #EVcharging industry: 🔌 €584 billion investment by #2030: The EU needs €584 billion in total investments, with €375-425 billion dedicated to distribution grids - great news for EV charging, where poor grid connections are the number 1 bottleneck in effective rollout! 🚗 Transport #decarbonization is on track for 2030 targets: Progress is strong, but the pace must accelerate. The EU needs to maintain ambition on electrification while tackling grid connection challenges. 🗝️ Implementation is key: Effective implementation of the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) will be crucial. Member States should focus on delivering the goals of the Electricity Market Design (EMD) to ensure a stable, affordable, and clean energy market. ⚡ Renewable energy & EV charging: Renewable energy growth and EV charging go hand in hand. Grid expansion and modernization are essential for integrating renewables and electrifying transport. ⚙️ Flexibility: Enhancing flexibility in power systems and electricity markets is key to integrating renewable energy sources. At this stage, an effective national-level implementation is now critical. Now let’s see what’s in store from next week’s State of the Union address!
