The European Environment Agency (EEA) has published a new briefing on Europe’s progress towards a circular economy. With a circularity rate of 11.8% in 2023, Europe is using more recycled materials than other regions, but improvements have been limited in recent years. ♻️The transition to a circular economy is a policy priority, focusing on reducing resource use, extending product lifespans, and improving recycling quality. The briefing, titled "Europe’s circular economy in facts and figures", suggests that to achieve these goals, Europe must strengthen policies, scale circular business models, and support secondary material markets. While resource efficiency is high, consumption and waste generation remain unsustainable. Prioritising high-quality recycling and decoupling economic growth from resource use will be key to meeting sustainability targets. Read the briefing here 👉 euric.link/gpc

Good news. The Government has adopted the first recommendation in the Circular Economy Ministerial Advisory Group report - a new Circular Economy Policy Framework for Australia with ambitious targets and clearly defined priorities. The Framework sets targets by 2035 to: - Double circularity - Shrink per capita material footprint by 10% - Lift material productivity by 30% - Safely recover 80% of our resources Check out the Framework here: https://lnkd.in/gECiCN9s

🔄 Urgent call for action! Despite legislative progress in the past five years, Europe's shift from a linear "throwaway" economy to a circular one demands bold new actions and strict implementation of existing measures. 🌍💼 🔍 The European Environment Agency's latest report highlights the need for drastic waste reduction, resource use minimization, improved recycling rates, and a shift towards products designed for circularity. 🔄♻️ 📈 While some progress has been made, with Europe's circularity rate at 11.5% in 2022, it's far from the 2030 goal of doubling it. The path to a regenerative economy in Europe requires more than just waste focus—it's about smarter resource use. 🚀🌱 🔝 Future actions must include setting ambitious resource use targets and enhancing recycling quality to foster EU resource independence and reduce imports.🔧♻️ 💡 Let's drive the change towards a more circular economy, aligning with EU #CircularEconomy #SustainableEurope #EUGreenDeal cc : Felix Papier Pierre-Emmanuel Saint-Esprit Justine Laurent https://lnkd.in/gatTdMa5

In our report on Circular Economy https://lnkd.in/gF-TmPG9 we called for industry to do its bit, for the reshaping of supply chains and for government to use regulation to tilt the playing field away from take/make/waste to more circularity. Heartening to see a real-life example from Denmark https://www.effekt.dk/ where more than 600 companies from across the country are collaborating to petition for changes to building regulations to mobilise the entire industry towards emission reduction goals and a sustainable future. https://lnkd.in/gsffP6_B

🌍 Today's EEA report underscores the urgent need for decisive action in Europe's transition to a circular economy. While EU policies have strengthened, they must become more binding to accelerate the shift towards a regenerative economy. The focus should extend beyond waste management to address resource use directly. 🔄 📈 Europe has made strides, stabilizing resource consumption while GDP grows. Yet, dependence on global imports for critical resources is rising. The Circular Economy Action Plan, a pillar of the European Green Deal, charts the course for this transformation, with progress seen in recycling rates and emerging circular business models. ♻️ 🎯 However, there's still ground to cover. With a circularity rate of 11.5%, Europe leads in recycled materials consumption, yet falls short of doubling this rate by 2030. The report indicates low to moderate likelihood of meeting current circularity goals without further action. 💡 🚀 Future efforts must prioritize setting targets, promoting higher quality recycling, and maximizing product lifespan through reuse, repair, and remanufacturing. Economic incentives should align with environmental impact, fostering resource independence and circularity. 🔄 🌱 To achieve sustainability, we must also address unsustainable consumption levels and pivot towards just transitions. Future EU policies should be informed by ongoing research on consumer behavior and embed principles of equitable change. Let's propel Europe towards a truly circular future. ♻️ #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #EU2030 🇪🇺 https://lnkd.in/eN8cuFiH

With a circularity rate of 11.5% in 2022, Europe consumes a higher proportion of recycled materials than other world regions. However, progress has been slow and we are still far from doubling the circularity rate by 2030. Read more in the European Environment Agency report 👇 https://lnkd.in/eN8cuFiH

Friday Find 16: To get to lasting solutions for everything from climate change to plastic pollution, we need to break away from our wasteful linear economy and create a safe and circular one. Everyone is starting to talk about circularity, but did you know that only 7.2% of global materials are cycled back into the economy. The Circularity Gap Report shows that consumption is continuing to rise while circularity has decreased in the last five years.

The Netherlands’ National Circular Economy Programme reflects its objective of a fair circular economy transition that limits negative consequences for low- and middle-income countries. In their latest, Nadia Ashraf, Daniel Adeoluwa Adeniyi, PhD and Jeske van Seters look at the external implications of the circular economy transition of the Netherlands and the EU, exploring its opportunities and challenges for low- and middle-income countries. They also look at the support that the EU and the Netherlands can provide to create the right conditions for countries to benefit from the transition and mitigate negative effects. 👉 https://bit.ly/48vzu8X
