🎉 Happy New Year to all human rights defenders, friends, and colleagues! 🎉 As we enter 2025, we are met with both significant challenges and new opportunities in our mission to advance human rights. The unwavering dedication of those fighting for these rights is crucial to fostering a fairer and more equitable world. Our focus remains on Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean, where we promote social inclusion and uphold human dignity. The European Union's cooperation programs serve as vital support for our organizations as we tackle these challenges. While the EU has increasingly emphasized political and economic relevance in its external cooperation—especially through the Global Gateway program—it is essential to acknowledge the role of civil society as a committed actor in promoting and defending Europe's core values. Collaborating with local civil society organizations not only strengthens our initiatives but also enhances the EU's relevance in partner countries. Our cooperation projects and programs have always aimed to promote sustainable development, create opportunities to escape poverty, and address the inadequacies of the rule of law and essential freedoms. Additionally, our work tackles the root causes of forced migration, the impacts of climate change, and the enhancement of civil protection and security, all of which align with key EU priorities. Therefore, from #RIDHE we urge the European Union to: 📌 Strengthen international cooperation: Collaborate with countries of origin and transit to develop inclusive strategies that mitigate forced migration. Prioritize human rights: Ensure that migration policies uphold and protect the rights of all migrants, irrespective of their status. 📌 Implement the Global Gateway: Utilize this framework to fund projects that enhance socioeconomic conditions in migration-affected regions, thereby fostering sustainable and equitable development. 📌 Today's global challenges demand a coordinated and humanitarian response. We hold hope that the European Union will lead and support all efforts by our organizations with courage and commitment. #HumanRights #MigrationCrisis #GlobalGateway #EuropeanUnion #SustainableDevelopment #SocialInclusion

Equal treatment, equal respect—for everyone. On #InternationalRomaDay, we celebrate the vibrant diversity, language, and culture of Europe's Roma community, comprising 10-12 million people across the EU and enlargement region. Yet, many Roma face high levels of antigypsyism and discrimination. In 10 EU countries, 80% are at risk of poverty, 52% suffer from housing deprivation, and 22% lack running water. The EU's Roma Strategic Framework 2020-2030 aims to change this by: 🔹halving the poverty gap, 🔹reducing housing shortages, 🔹integrating Roma children into education. We urge EU countries, particularly those with large Roma populations, to intensify efforts for visible progress, utilizing EU funds for Roma inclusion. Together, let's build a fair and equal Europe for all. 💬 I had the pleasure of speaking at the opening of 📅 #EURomaniWeek, a series of events organised by EU institutions, civil society organisations and international (governmental) organisations to mark #InternationalRomaDay. This year's focus was on both the future ↔ and the past. We had fruitful discussions about the future of Roma, Sinti and Travellers in Europe and how this agenda fits into the broader European political discourse, especially in the context of the upcoming #EUelections 🗳, but we also commemorated the past and the atrocities of the Roma Holocaust that took place 80 years ago. 🕯 🎯 Looking ahead, with the EU Roma Strategic Framework for Equality, Inclusion and Participation, we have set clear targets to be achieved by 2030 to promote participation through ✊🏽 empowerment, 🤝 cooperation and 💟 trust. Also, the Commission is implementing the 🔎Roma Civil Monitoring🔍 initiative since 2017, which includes a capacity building component and works with 1️⃣3️⃣2️⃣ NGOs and individual experts, the majority of whom are Roma, which is a very important step forward in this area! Another important tool for supporting Roma is EU funding 🛠 💶. One example of how much can be achieved through #funding and #cooperation is the EU-funded Calí programme in Spain. This nationwide, holistic program works to improve the inclusion of Roma women in Spain by addressing their specific needs, enabling them to fully exercise their rights as citizens 💯 and strengthening their skills to improve their employability 🤝📑. But as long as Roma continue to face 🚨high levels of #discrimination, our work is not done. We must continue to work closely together and fight on all fronts to: ✔ improve access to quality and non-segregated #education, #employment, #health and #housing for Roma, ✔build capacity, ✔and to combat anti-gypsyism and discrimination ⏩ you can read more about the Calí programme: https://lnkd.in/eiKsrmxP
