CFD Analyses of Agitated Tanks 🔍 Agitated tanks are widely used in all kind of sectors, from the pharmaceutical to the food industry. They are meant to mix and/or heat different species that can be gas, liquids or solids, and can include chemical reactions. CFD is beneficial at different levels when designing agitated tanks: ➡ Optimize number of agitators and their position ➡ Optimize agitator rotation speed ➡ Predict mixing time and homogeneity ➡ Predict solid particles suspension ➡ Predict free surface deformation Below is a demonstration case done with Star-CCM+ featuring: ✅ VOF model to take into account the deformation of the free surface and the interaction with the agitator ✅ AMR to minimize the number of cells while being able to capture the medium size captured air bubbles ✅ Sliding mesh to model the rotation of the agitators ✅ Two-way coupling DEM to model solid particles suspension (here the particles are inert, but heat and mass transfer can be added) ✅ Passive Scalar transport with frozen flow which is a quick and easy way to derive the mixing time ✅ Advanced Rendering for more realistic post-processing Simulation and animation done by EUROCFD with Simcenter Star-CCM+. #cfd #siemens #starccm #process #agitatedtanks
