As part of our internship programme at the West African Institute of Public Health, my group was given a task to run a one week social media campaign on the topic "Universal Health Coverage: leave no one behind" Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is not a means to an end but rather a continual process. The primary determinant of every individual health behaviour is their finance (Dr. Francis Ohanyido). Parents, adults (both male and female), upper class (elite,wealthy high-income earners), middle class ( average income earners, working professional), as well as the lower class ( low-income earners, labourers, underprivileged) are all aware that the best place to seek a proper medical intervention irrespective of their ailments is within a standard medical facilities. But, due to the lack of funds, most underprivileged often prefer the use of traditional or indigenous medicines that are affordable "if not free," suffering from the lack of regulation, limited scientific evidence, quality control issue, etc, in the process endangering their lives and that of their wards. This is why the provision of adequate and appropriate equitable, accessible, affordable, and comprehensive health care services for all is important regardless of our social or financial status. Key principles of UHC: 1. Accessibility: Healthcare services are accessible to all, regardless of geographical location or financial situation. 2. Comprehensiveness: Essential healthcare services, including prevention, treatment, and palliative care, are covered. 3. Affordability: Healthcare services are affordable, and financial protection is ensured through mechanisms like insurance or subsidies. 4. Equity: Healthcare services are distributed based on need rather than the ability to pay. By achieving UHC, countries can make significant progress towards achieving the SDGs and creating a healthier, more equitable world. I still vividly remember the day it was announced that I was the Valedictorian of the ALX Virtual Assistant Course cohort in 2022. I was taken aback, to say the least. It was a surreal moment that left me beaming with pride and gratitude. Giving the valedictory speech to hundreds of young African VA graduate was so humbling with a miss feeling of joy and gratitude to God. Looking back, it's clear that my dedication and hard work paid off. My journey to becoming Valedictorian was paved with consistent effort and a willingness to go above and beyond. I made it a point to be extremely active on the Slack platform, where I engaged with my peers, offered support, and provided guidance whenever needed. I responded to countless questions, shared resources, and offered words of encouragement. My commitment to excellence was evident in my submissions, which were always completed on time and to the highest standards possible. I strived for perfection in every milestone, pouring my heart and soul into each task. The result? I achieved the highest grades possible, a testament to my unwavering dedication. Becoming Valedictorian was not just a personal achievement but also a reflection of the supportive community that ALX fosters. The Virtual Assistant Course taught me the value of collaboration, the importance of seeking help when needed, and the power of community-driven learning. My experience serves as a reminder that success is within reach when we combine hard work, determination, and a willingness to support one another. The Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network (RMCLHN) is delighted to hear a trial of the Single Employer Model (SEM) will be expanded across regional South Australia following the great success of the SEM in RMCLHN’s Riverland Academy of Clinical Excellence (RACE). The model enables rural generalist and general practice trainees to be employed by the South Australian Health Service as salaried employees for up to four years while they complete their vocational training, instead of having to change employers every six or 12 months with each new placement. This makes it more appealing for Trainee Medical Officers (TMOs) to enter the rural generalist pathway by providing continual access to leave entitlements under the one employer. RMCLHN pioneered a SEM trial in 2023 offering RACE employees five-year contracts in the region, meaning they can put down roots in our communities. There are now more than 30 RACE trainees working across RMCLHN with a 98% retention rate – increasing our medical workforce by more than 25%. RMCLHN’s CEO Wayne Champion says he’s proud RMCLHN is leading the way. “The model allows us to engage TMOs for their entire postgraduate medical training pathway - from graduation with a medical degree to Fellowship as our employees.” “It means we can offer a structured program to meet all their training needs so that they can graduate as a fully qualified GP or Rural Generalist, while offering long-term employment certainty,” he said. “This is the secret sauce that has seen the program’s long-term success and we’re delighted to see other areas of the state will now have the opportunity to follow our lead.” Inaugural RACE intern Dr Jerida Keane said the model offered the capacity for flexibility, the opportunity to rethink fixed structures, and removed barriers for doctors to train to be rural generalists. “The fee for service model works for some trainees, the single employer model works better for others, and some prefer a mix of the two. Flexibility and options are key to maximum retention.” “RACE has shown that when implemented with a collection of other retention strategies, single employer models have the capacity to retain doctors in regional areas,” Dr Keane said. Merit Medical Galway have been collaborating with Atlantic Technological University for some time. In this video, they discuss the value that #RPL has brought to the company. The Bachelor of Science Quality for Industry (Level 7) programme at ATU was co-developed with industry, making it a popular choice for employees in the #Medtech sector as it aligns with, and complements existing skills. Many employees at Merit Medical have gained #access to this programme via RPL. Hear first-hand how RPL is a valuable process in helping employees to reflect on and demonstrate their prior learning in order to gain new qualifications and address skills gaps. We hear how #RPL learners bring real-life experiences to lectures and contribute greatly to learning. RPL supports greater engagement with industry partners across the region, benefitting #enterprise, the #university and the learners. For anyone who is interested in RPL but who may not have an existing formal qualification, you are encouraged to explore RPL as an option.
