Last week, we were privileged to attend a three-day workshop seminar at Victoria Island, Lagos State, Nigeria. The event titled "The Science of Trade Conference (SOT) 2024 was a conference designed to empower African entrepreneurs in the world of trade. It aimed to equip them with the knowledge and connections to navigate the complexities of local and international trade, ultimately unlocking business growth. The conference offered training on various aspects of trade, including: Export readiness, Trade facilitation, Digital trade, E-commerce, Utilizing trade policies. It specifically focused on intra-country, intra-Africa, and global trade opportunities. The agenda also explored the benefits of the Africa Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) for African entrepreneurs. Beyond just providing knowledge, the SOT aimed to foster connections among entrepreneurs, trade professionals, and other key players in the trade ecosystem. This networking aspect was designed to create a supportive community that would promote trade, knowledge sharing, collaboration, and ultimately business growth. We are proud of the efforts Agro traders put into meeting international standards and we look forward to being a benchmark in the international market. We are honoured to be part of the South African business delegation to China on an official state visit to strengthen economic ties between the nations. Although South Africa already exports beef products to China, this mission is crucial for us to assist in expanding market access for the beef industry, ensuring that all role players — especially our primary producers — benefit from more trade opportunities during these challenging economic times. “The deepening relationship between South Africa and China, a key market for our beef exports, could unlock an additional 50% more beef exports within the next year,” said Louw van Reenen, Executive Chairman of the Beefmaster Group Board, who is in Beijing, China. In 2023, South Africa’s bilateral trade reached $34 billion, with exports totalling $12 billion. Thanks to increased global market access, in the first six months of 2024, the South African beef industry exported more beef than any corresponding period in the past eight years, according to recent data by the Red Meat Producers Organisation. “We are proud to play a vital role in global food security by supplying China with our world-class beef products.
