The #EPA State of the Environment Report 2024 underscores the construction sector’s significant environmental footprint, especially in terms of waste generation and emissions. Despite ambitious environmental policies in place, the report highlights serious deficits in how Ireland has implemented EU environmental legislation, making it clear that more rigorous enforcement and accountability are required. The construction sector, in particular, must take responsibility for addressing high levels of waste and emissions as it contributes significantly to environmental degradation.

Not only do these reports provide valuable insights that inform waste management policy, but they also hold businesses to account over poor waste treatment practices. 📢NEWS RELEASE: Earthworks Industries has provided an update on the status of the EPA approval for its Cortina integrated waste handling project. The EPA filed a Notice of Deficiency regarding our Proposed Municipal Solid Waste Landfill and is inviting public comment on the Notice until June 3, 2024. Company President and CEO David B. Atkinson expressed excitement at reaching this final stage of the EPA's review, noting that: "On initial review, SCS has advised us that the additional deficiencies identified are minor in nature and should be resolved in very short order. Until a few years ago, the City of Belgrade was home to Europe’s largest unmanaged landfill with a legacy of pollution, foul odor, and contaminated waterways. Through a robust public-private partnership (PPP) implemented with the support of IFC - International Finance Corporation’s Transaction Advisory team, the Vinča landfill underwent a complete overhaul that transformed a once notorious site, with its landslides, fires and methane emissions, into a sustainable, revenue-generating, environmentally conscious waste management infrastructure project. The PPP, managed by a special-purpose vehicle (SPV) formed by global utility company Veolia, Japanese conglomerate ITOCHU Corporation, and Marguerite Fund II, a pan-European equity fund, received €260million in financing and guarantees from IFC and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), including a €20 million blended concessional loan from the Canada-IFC Blended Climate Finance Program. The successful working of the PPP model enabled the City to better manage budgets and timelines, while setting an example for Serbia to use PPPs to upgrade public infrastructure and services in other sectors as well. The waste-to-energy facility has the capacity to convert up to 340,000 tons of waste into renewable heat and electricity, while the waste recycling plant recycles 200,000 tons of construction and demolition waste per year. Together, these project components are expected to reduce Belgrade’s greenhouse gas emissions by 210,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year. Belgrade's pioneering initiative has not only revitalized the surrounding landscape and the lives of nearby residents, but has also helped create jobs with improved working conditions. The ambitious project also sets a precedent for cities in other emerging markets to finance the implementation of climate-resilient waste management infrastructure requirements by using a creative financing solution like public-private partnerships.
